Which Premier League teams will be relegated this season?

14/03/2024

The Premier League relegation battle this season is a very interesting one as several clubs continue to battle to stay in the English top flight.

From the beginning of the term, some clubs have struggled to keep themselves in good form or win games consistently.

Ideally, the newly promoted sides are struggling to remain in the top flight the most because they are coming to a very competitive level.

The Championship is one of the toughest levels of football in the world, even though it is only England’s second division.

Several clubs send their youngsters down to that level to gain valuable experience because of the quality of the competition.

It is stronger and richer than some European top-flight divisions because clubs there work hard to prepare for life in arguably the best top-flight in the world.

However, we often find that doing well in the Championship does not guarantee success in the Premier League.

Years back, Norwich made a meal of England’s second division as they played fantastic football and earned promotion with ease as an unstoppable force in the second division under Daniel Farke.

However, after they got promoted to the top flight, they realised the level is much higher than where they had come from and they struggled until they were relegated.

They were promoted again in a similarly brilliant fashion under the same manager and suffered the same fate.

Last season, Burnley was in terrific form under Vincent Kompany and gained promotion to the top flight, but they have struggled throughout this season and are set to be relegated again.

They have stuck to their manager, while Sheffield United have changed theirs, but the Blades are still very likely to be relegated.

Luton was promoted via the playoff, but some dogged performances in key games this season make them one of the favourites to stay up.

This means other established Premier League sides like Everton, Crystal Palace and Brentford are at risk of dropping to the second division, and we discuss what fans who buy match tickets from vetted resellers on Seatsnet can expect in the relegation battle.

Sheffield United

Sheffield gave Paul Heckingbottom a long time to turn things around at the club as they desperately want to stay in the Premier League, but it soon became obvious that he could not do that, and they replaced him.

Chris Wilder returned to the club as his replacement, a popular but surprising appointment because he has not been successful as a coach since he got the Blades relegated during his first spell as their manager.

Wilder has been working hard to get the team back to winning ways and to stop conceding a lot of goals, but Sheffield has hardly improved since he returned and has won three of his first 16 games as their manager.

Wilder has given the team a new look and more confidence, but they are still prone to conceding a lot of goals and Sheffield is likely to be relegated this term.

Burnley

Burnley has stuck with Kompany despite their horriific season as they do not seem to think another manager will do a good job.

After the first 28 league games of the season, the Clarets and Blues are second from bottom on the league table, having won just three matches, losing 20.

Kompany was one of the best Premier League defenders when he played, and his Burnley team was unstoppable in the Championship last season, however, his spell as their manager in the English top flight has not been successful.

The former defender still retains the backing of his employers, but they might be backing him to take them down.

Considering that Burnley will still face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and they will also travel to Manchester to face United while visiting Tottenham before the final day of the season, then it is hard to see them survive the drop.

Luton Town

There was a time when Luton was among the most in-form clubs in the Premier League and Europe as Rob Edwards’ side delivered fine performances against any opponent they faced.

They were the last team to be promoted to the top flight last season because they had to do it the hard way through the playoffs.

However, they have impressed in patches in the league this term and famously nearly defeated Liverpool at home, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw, thanks to a late Luis Diaz goal.

Luton is now back to poor form as they struggle to win games against opponents they did better against in their previous meeting.

It has pushed them back into relegation troubles after 27 games, but Edward’s side looks the most likely of the newly promoted sides to stay up.

They have been showing grit and perseverance in several games, and their team plays much better than the likes of Burnley and Sheffield United, and are rarely beaten easily

But their next 11 games, which includes a trip to treble-hunting Manchester City will be tough as they also face Arsenal at the Emirates, which means there are at least two games we expect them to lose.

Nottingham Forest

Forest managed to avoid relegation last season despite changing almost their entire team and adding several new players to their squad in the summer.

They struggled for much of the term, but somehow Steve Cooper managed to keep them in the top flight as their owners prepared for more spending.

Despite adding several exciting names to their group at the start of this season, including the likes of Anthony Elanga, Divock Origi and Callum Hudson Odoi, Cooper failed to make the team better and was sacked.

Nuno Espirito Santo is the latest manager trying to save them, and his job has been far from easy.

Forest is 17th on the league table after 28 matches, and just three points separate them from the drop zone.

They have improved in their performance overall and Liverpool required a late goal to beat them in a recent game.

Being difficult for the top clubs to beat will help them in their quest to stay up, but more importantly, they have to start winning games against smaller opponents.

Everton

Everton has generally done well since Sean Dyche came to town, and there was a time this season when they were unstoppable and looked set for a place in Europe.

However, they were soon hit with a ten-point deduction which was later reduced to six on appeal.

The Toffees have remained one of the most important clubs in the Premier League, and no one expects them to get relegated soon.

However, that point deduction seems to have affected the morale of the players at Goodson Park, and Everton struggles nowadays.

They have a good manager and the squad to survive the drop, but they have to get back to winning ways and start securing as much victory as possible

Brentford

Brentford welcomed Ivan Toney back after his suspension in the first half of the term, which affected their performance and threatened to push them into the drop zone.

Toney’s return to the team is yet to make the impact most people thought it would make, and the Bees are at risk of dropping down divisions.

Thomas Frank’s side is a good team and recently made life hard for Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, they need to start winning their games against opponents of lesser quality to survive the drop.

Conclusion

The likes of Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are also not so far from relegation trouble and have to watch their backs as the season draws to a close.

However, the clubs we have mentioned above are at the bigger risk of dropping down divisions, and the next ten matches are the biggest fixtures in their calendar should they want to stay in the Premier League.
