Can Bayern Munich win the Champions League this season?

26/09/2023

Bayern Munich won the Champions League last in 2020 and will want to repeat that success in this campaign.

The Germans have remained one of the most competitive teams in Europe, and Thomas Tuchel is one of the top managers on the continent.

The Tuchel Effect

Interestingly, the gaffer was in charge of the PSG team that lost the 2020 final to Bayern, but he was a champion in 2021, this time with Chelsea.

Tuchel has been around the top of the European game since he moved to Borussia Dortmund as their gaffer and is a manager we all expect to succeed at Bayern.

In Germany, he reached the final of the German Cup in 2016 and 2017, winning the latter with BVB.

This allowed him to move to PSG as one of the finest coaches around, and he achieved further success at the French club.

Tuchel won the league twice in successive seasons, but in the 2019/2020 term, he showed he was a top manager in the European game.

His PSG side played some superb brand of football and reached the final of the Champions League, despite the Covid-19 outbreak that disrupted the football calendar.

He did not have the chance to complete the next campaign at the French club, but success followed him to London after Chelsea made him their manager following a poor start to the season.

After beating Manchester City in the final, he ended the 2020/2021 term as a Champions League winner with the Blues.

Tuchel has returned to Germany with Bayern, and he is one reason fans will buy Bayern Munich tickets on a secondary marketplace.

Harry Kane is inevitable

Harry Kane's move to Bayern Munich in the last transfer window is one of the transfers of the decade, and the Englishman will thrive in Bavaria.

For several seasons, he was one of the best strikers in the English game and scored 30 Premier League goals last season, even though Spurs were having a bad season.

The Lilywhites were very reluctant to allow their talisman to leave, and for a very good reason, as the goal machine has singlehandedly held the club back from struggling with relegation.

Their loss will now be Bayern's gain after the Germans paid 100m euros to bag the England captain.

Kane has scored 302 career goals at the time of this writing and has five goals from his first five competitive games for Bayern Munich.

He is a Spurs record goalscorer with 280 goals while scoring 46 goals in 77 European games for Spurs and Bayern.

At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Kane won the Golden Boot, a huge accolade underlining his quality.

After losing Robert Lewandowski, adding Kane to their squad is a clear sign of improvement, and Bayern can go on to win the Champions League this term.

Abundance of attacking talents

While adding Kane to the Bayern Munich squad makes it significantly stronger, the Germans still have a lot of quality in their attack.

Bayern is an attacking team and has built a group of attacking talents that we consider some of the best in Europe.

They signed Leroy Sane from Manchester City not so long ago, and he arrived at the club with so much experience, having worked with arguably the best manager in the world, Pep Guardiola.

The Bayern side also has Serge Gnabry, who was one of the protagonists of their victory in the 2020 Champions League.

Gnabry was a flop at Arsenal, but he became a global superstar when he moved to Bayern and remains among the fastest and most technically blessed attackers in the world.

Kingsley Coman has won a league crown every year of his professional career after spending time at PSG and Juventus.

He found a home at Bayern and has continued to enjoy his time at the German club. The Bavarians can trust the 27-year-old to maintain his fine standard and help them win the Champions League this term.

Thomas Muller is ever-green and has continued to play a starring role for the club, even if he is used off the bench in games.

The German is now 34 and has been at the club all his career, having debuted for the first team in 2008.

Muller is a player who understands the club's history and has been with it throughout this era of dominance in German football.

His contributions on and off the pitch will help the other players know why they must win this season's competition.

Young talents and all-round quality.

Bayern added Kane to their squad this summer, and the Englishman is not a player for the future, but their team is filled with younger talents all around.

One man to watch is Mathys Tel, who was a surprise signing by the Bavarians last year.

He joined from Rennes, who are famous for grooming top talents and has not been a disappointment for an 18-year-old.

The Frenchman is a player Bayern can bank on to make an impact off the bench as he did in the Champions League opener against Manchester United.

In midfield and defence, quality players in the Bayern ranks make them one of the hardest clubs to face in Europe.

Tuchel can call on Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Konrad Laimer in a solid midfield and his defence has more than enough quality options.

Matthijs de Ligt is one of the best centre-backs in Europe, but the Dutchman cannot even get into the Bayern team.

He is annoyed at his limited chances at the club, but Bayern has some of the finest defenders in Europe in their squad.

The Bavarians have preferred the pairing of Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano in their defence but could easily use Bouna Sarr, Joshua Kimich and Tarek Buchmann there.

The club has spent some money on top talents and can be sure they will get value from them in this campaign.

Bundesliga boredom

It is now boring to win the German top flight, considering Bayern has won it in consecutive seasons in the last decade.

Even when they had a poor campaign the last time, the Bavarians still ended the season as champions of Germany after a shocking collapse from Borussia Dortmund.

This is why winning the Champions League will be the primary measure of success for the team in this campaign.

Tuchel knows this, and failure to make an impression in the competition could lead to his sacking, which will be understandable.

This does not mean Bayern can fail to win the league and the gaffer will keep his job, but there is an overwhelming feeling that winning the Champions League will give the former Chelsea coach and his players a heroes welcome in Bavaria, even if their domestic term does not end successfully.

Conclusion

Kane has joined Bayern Munich to win team trophies, and they seem to be the perfect team to achieve this.

But it will take more than him joining the team to achieve that success in the Champions League.

With Tuchel as the manager, the Bavarians have an experienced boss who can bring home the trophy, but this is one of the hardest terms to win the UCL, with many of the top clubs on the continent also keen on winning it.

It would be interesting to see how far Bayern goes in the competition, but they have the players who can bring the trophy back to Germany ahead of Euro 2024.
