How can Borussia Dortmund win another Bundesliga title?

26/09/2023

Borussia Dortmund has not won a league title since 2012, when Jurgen Klopp was their manager and that is not because they do not want another one.

The Black and Yellows have come close to ending this league drought for much of the last terms and came agonisingly close to being champions of Germany again in the previous campaign.

BVB needed to win their final game of the season to be crowned champions after an indifferent season for Bayern Munich.

The game was played in their home, and fans had been sure they would win the league, but without their star man, Jude Bellingham, in the starting team, Dortmund dropped two points against Mainz.

Bayern were crowned Champions of Germany again, leaving Dortmund empty-handed for yet another campaign.

The Bavarians know they were lucky to have won that crown, and BVB will feel the exact opposite after what seems to be a brilliant campaign from them.

In the end, the wait goes on, and they are no closer to ending the dominance of Bayern Munich after the arrival of Harry Kane in Bavaria.

The Englishman scored goals for fun in one of the toughest leagues in the world and certainly will do better in the German top flight.

The stakes have not been higher for BVB to become champions of Germany, and their fans who patronise the right ticket marketplace for Borussia Dortmund tickets will still want to be champions.

Bayern are a top team, but they are not unstoppable and BVB is one of the teams that are best placed to end their dominance, but they must change things around to overthrow their illustrious rivals.

Appoint an experienced coach

Dortmund prides itself on developing talents, including coaches, and often names managers who are at the start of their careers or who have not achieved much success to their bench.

They have done this for several decades, and Klopp wasn’t a big name when he was named their manager.

When he left the club, he had won the league, making it a good decision to take a chance on him.

Thomas Tuchel also became their manager before he achieved global recognition and did a good job at the club, even though he did not win the league.

The current manager is 40-year-old Edin Terzić, one of the youngest managers in the top European leagues but also one of the most inexperienced.

He won the DFB Pokal in 2021, which made the club believe he was a gem, and he was handed a long-term contract.

Terzic nearly won the league last season before his team lost the title on the final day of the season.

It is easy to look at the bright side and say he almost won the title with a young team that was unfancied at the start of the term.

However, his failure also shows why the club needs a different manager and one that is more experienced.

If Dortmund had one, they would not drop two points on the final day of the season in front of their fans against Mainz, with so much at stake.

Terzić is a good managerial talent and his achievement last season has likely earned him another season at the helm at the club, but Dortmund will hardly come that close to catching Bayern again.

If they mean business, they have to appoint one of the best managers in Europe who has a proven track record of winning league titles and other trophies.

This individual will arrive in the Bundesliga with the expertise needed to stop Bayern from dominating the domestic competition.

Spend money on top players

Another habit we all associate with Borussia Dortmund is that they like to groom players and thrive on buying undeveloped talents, moulding them and selling them at a higher fee.

From the business perspective, this model is great; however, for a club that wants to win the league, BVB must change their approach.

Bayern has shown just what to do to win the German Bundesliga for several seasons, and Dortmund must copy them to achieve success.

The Bavarians invest heavily in world-class talents and compete with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Liverpool, and Manchester City to buy stars.

This is one of their secrets of success in Europe and in the Bundesliga, and BVB must adopt this blueprint to displace them at the top of the German league table.

Buying youngsters to develop will continue to keep their bank accounts healthy, but fans want more. They want a return to the days when BVB won the league and reached the final of the Champions League.

Youngsters can win you some matches, but they will never win you trophies. The earlier Dortmund realises this and changes their approach, the better it would be for them.

Change the culture at the club

We cannot say there is a culture of mediocrity at Dortmund because they have consistently been the second-best club in Germany, and only the brilliance of Bayern has stopped them from winning the league.

However, the men with the Yellow Wall seem to have accepted that they are inferior to Bayern in domestic competitions and will always be below them.

This is one explanation for how they capitulated in the final match of last season and why they have failed to give Bayern a tough title race for several campaigns.

They probably need a new manager who can bring about the type of transformation that Mikel Arteta brought to Arsenal.

If Terzic wants to remain the boss, he must prove he can significantly change the culture at the club and make his men believe they can and deserve to be champions of Germany.

If he changes the culture and helps his boys develop a winning mindset that makes them deliver top performances against all odds, he can be sure that they will win another league crown, this time under him.

Focus on the league

It is an arduous task to compete for the league and other trophies because every league season is a marathon and not a sprint.

Combining challenging for the title alongside winning another trophy can be too much for a team to handle.

This is why it is a rare achievement when a club wins more than one trophy in a season, including their domestic league.

BVB has consistently competed in the Champions League and DFB Pokal while chasing a league crown.

They have struggled to maintain a strong campaign in either competition and the smart thing for them to do would be to focus on the most important one, which in this case is the league.

If they want to win the league again, they could decide to rest their key players for other competitions and field them only in league matches, which are always weekly.

These players will have ample time to rest during the week and will be sharper in the league matches, improving the team’s chance of winning more domestic games and that could get them ever closer to being champions again.

BVB deserves to win another league title after their collapse at the end of last term, but Bayern has learnt that they could lose their spot as the top German club if they relax and we expect them not to allow Dortmund come that close to winning the title again.

Because of this, the Yellow and Blacks must find a way to beat their rivals to the title soon enough.
