Who is the next superstar to earn Borussia Dortmund millions?

28/08/2023

Borussia Dortmund is famed for developing some of the world's best talents and selling them for big money in the future.

The Germans are a magnet for talented youngsters around the world because of their reputation for signing players who are yet to find their feet and ensuring they become top professionals.

Several names are on their books now, and these individuals will hope to follow in the footsteps of Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham to make big-money moves from the German side.

Haaland was on their books for two-and-half seasons before moving to Manchester City for 60 million euros last year.

The Norwegian is not the first player BVB bought and sold for a huge profit; he did not make them a lot of money when he was sold.

Before him, Dortmund earned a huge windfall from buying and selling Ousmane Dembele in 2017.

The Frenchman spent just a season with them after joining them from Rennes in France. Barcelona sold Neymar in 2017 and immediately turned to adding Dembele to their squad.

The attacker went on strike to force the move, and Dortmund eventually agreed to sell him for around €105 million plus a reported €40 million add-ons.

They had signed him for just 35m euros from Rennes and went on to make a huge profit from his departure.

They repeated this trick with Jadon Sancho and signed the youngster for just £8 million from Manchester City's academy.

Sancho would develop into one of the world's lethal players in their books and consistently either scored or provided an assist.

His Dortmund stats were superb, and European clubs began to circle the attacker, with the Germans fighting hard to keep their top talent, but he eventually left them for Manchester United in 2021.

The Red Devils paid £73m for the winger, representing another massive profit on a top player, with Dortmund already grooming Jude Bellingham for a huge transfer in the future.

The midfielder arrived in Germany in 2020 from Birmingham City and continued to develop into one of the world's best players.

Bellingham was ready to leave this summer, and several clubs were in the running, but his preference was either Liverpool or Real Madrid.

The Spanish side eventually won the race for his signature and paid BVB €103 million for a player they signed £25 million three years earlier.

The midfielder took Dortmund closest to winning another league crown, and he is one player they never wanted to lose.

However, not many clubs would have turned down such a huge fee for a player they signed for far less.

Dortmund still has some superb players on their books now, and the club is already grooming their next €100m + player.

In this article, we look at some of the players at the Yellow and Black now who could potentially become their next superstar sale.

Giovanni Reyna, 20

Reyna is the son of a former USA player, so it is safe to say football runs in their family, and the attacker is one player to keep an eye on.

He continues a proud tradition of American players coming through the ranks at BVB and is one player we can be sure will eventually leave them for a reasonable fee.

Injuries have been a problem for Reyna, but the American has still played over 100 competitive games for Dortmund since he broke through at the club in 2020.

He is steadily improving, and last season was his best goal-scoring term for them, even though he played just 22 league games.

Dortmund know they have a top player on their hands, and he could step up now that Bellingham is out of the club, but he must overcome his fitness problems.

Nico Schlotterbeck, 23

Most of the players who have earned Borussia Dortmund good money when they leave are attackers and midfielders.

One key stat that makes them attractive is the goals and assists they provide for the German side.

Nevertheless, Dortmund could still make some good money from selling a defender soon, and that could be Nico Schlotterbeck.

They spent 25m euros to add him to their squad last summer as one of the most promising defenders in the Bundesliga.

BVB would want him to become a defensive stalwart for them and stay for years, but if the youngster keeps performing well, he will become one of their most expensive sales.

They nearly won the Bundesliga last season, which was his first in Black and Yellow, and that shows how big an impact he has made since he came through the door at Dortmund.

Karim Adeyemi, 21

Adeyemi is arguably the biggest attacking talent at Dortmund now, and some people will say he is certainly the next player whose transfer will earn them big bucks.

The German-Nigerian has been one of the most exciting players in the Dortmund team, and who can forget his goal against Chelsea in the Champions League last season?

He announced himself on the European scene with that superb solo effort that saw him run through the Blues defence to find the back of the net.

Adeyemi scored nine goals in 32 competitive games for Dortmund last season, but that is not a bad figure, considering it was his first season at the club.

He is expected to keep improving, and he proved in Austria while playing for RB Salzburg that he can score goals when he gets comfortable.

Fans buy Borussia Dortmund tickets to see their heroes play, and Adeyemi is one of the newest heroes for the BVB faithful.

Donyell Malen, 24

At 24, Malen is running out of time to become one of the most notable players Dortmund has ever had.

The Dutchman joined them as a replacement for Jadon Sancho in 2021, but he has not hit the ground running as much as BVB would have liked.

There have been great performances from him, and his goal tally improved last season, but there is a feeling he can do more.

If the ex-Arsenal trainee can get better and reach his full potential, he could become the next big-money sale that Dortmund will make in the next transfer window.

Youssoufa Moukoko, 18

The latest sensation in the Borussia Dortmund group is Moukoko, who came through the ranks at the German club, having been born in Cameroon.

There has been controversy over his age in recent times, but what cannot be disputed is that Moukoko is a superb talent.

He was given his debut at 16 after he scored 141 goals in just 88 games for Dortmund's under-17 and under-19 sides.

This absolute dominance of the youth game forced the Bundesliga to lift their age restriction on debutants, and he soon became the youngest player to feature and score in the German top flight.

It seemed like BVB had found their next top striker since the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2018.

Moukoko has remained in the Dortmund first team since 2020 and is now one of their most important players.

At 18, he is just getting started, and if he comes close to scoring as many goals as he did during his time with their youth team, he will rival Erling Haaland and become the next player BVB will sell for more than 100 million euros.

Dortmund is the best place for any young player to move to when they want to improve their career, and the German side will continue to groom talents and heroes for the bigger European sides to buy.

It would be interesting to see which of these players would be the first to leave the club and how much they will make the Black and Yellow.
