Decisions Jurgen Klopp must make this summer to help Liverpool

26/06/2023

Liverpool is expected to have a good season in the next campaign after they practically flopped in the last one.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have set a high standard for themselves since the German arrived in the Premier League scene.

They remain the only club that has stopped Manchester City from winning the league since Pep Guardiola has been succeeding in England.

Several times Liverpool has come close to winning another league crown, so we were surprised that they struggled in the last campaign.

When the Reds are in full flow, they are almost unstoppable, and we expect that when they return to the next season.

Klopp has some of the finest players in England in his squad at the moment, and the German will get support to improve his options even better in this transfer window.

Because they will not play in the Champions League next season, we expect them to struggle to land the best players on the planet.

They have already missed out on the signature of Jude Bellingham, who has chosen to move to Real Madrid.

The midfielder would have made Liverpool a Champions League favourite almost immediately, but the Reds have a squad capable of challenging for titles in the next campaign.

Klopp just needs to add some new men to the group, but the main work is making everyone play together as a unit.

If Liverpool is in fine form, they can defeat any opponent, so we expect them to do well if they prepare satisfactorily in pre-season for the campaign ahead.

Fans that will buy Liverpool tickets on Seatsnet will want to see a resurgent Reds team when 2023/2024 campaign begins.

Pick a role for Cody Gakpo

Gakpo is one of the finest players Liverpool has signed recently, and the Dutchman’s spell at Anfield has been superb so far.

He joined the Reds in January and seemed to struggle in the first few weeks after making the move to the Premier League, which is natural.

England’s top flight is arguably the most challenging league in the world, so the attacker had to adapt, and he also did not play in pre-season with them.

There were a lot of expectations on him because of his superb performance for PSV and the Netherlands, so there were criticisms.

However, Klopp kept faith with him and continued to use the attacker until he began to do well for the Kop.

By the end of the season, he had scored seven goals and provided two assists from 21 league games for them.

These numbers are impressive when you consider that he was used in different positions during the campaign.

Being able to play anywhere across the attack, including as a number 10, is great for Gakpo, but Klopp must find his best position and stick him there.

This will grant him greater opportunities to find some consistency in their books. They can sign new players to fill in for the roles they lack cover.

Find a backup for Salah

Mohamed Salah is one of the fittest speedsters in the Premier League, with the Egyptian blessed with a healthy body that makes it hard for him to be injured.

Salah played every single Liverpool league match last season, which is remarkable for a 30-year-old.

He looks like a player that can continue to perform well into his late 30s, but Liverpool does not have to wait until he is no longer reliable.

Now is the best time to find a replacement for him, and that individual can start as an alternative to the Egyptian.

This player will also help Liverpool rest their main man for some games, which will make him fresh for their important matches.

It remains unclear if he will be handed a new contract at the club, but Liverpool must have it in mind that Salah will not play football forever, and this summer is a good time to add someone to act as his alternative to their squad.

Move Trent to midfield

Trent Alexander Arnold has never been a good defensive full-back since he became a player for Liverpool, and he is one man you cannot trust to defend well.

Yet he is one of the finest full-backs in the world, and the reason for this is not so far from all of us.

The Liverpool man has some of the best passing range in the world and continues to prove he can be a comfortable midfielder.

In the final games of last season, Liverpool changed their shape and gave him more freedom to move into midfield and dictate the play.

That decision proved to be a masterstroke as the defender provided several assists in the last games of the campaign.

During the international break, Gareth Southgate handed him the number 10 shirt and then played him in midfield for the Three Lions.

The Liverpool man was unplayable and in superb form in the games he played for his country, and for the first time, he was praised for his performance in an England shirt.

He scored a goal for England against Malta and provided a delicious assist for one of Bukayo Saka’s goals against North Macedonia.

Trent is now set to be transformed into a midfielder, and Klopp must make that decision because Liverpool lacks a player who could make those passes and dictate the play from the middle.

Turning the England star into a midfielder seems to be the obvious thing to do, and we expect him to shine there if Klopp decides it is the best place for him.

Buy a new quality right-back

This point follows the previous one. If Klopp decides now is the right time for Trent to move into midfield, then Liverpool must sign a new right-back.

The Reds signed Calvin Ramsay in the last summer transfer window as they were impressed with the Aberdeen star.

However, the 19-year-old spent much of his first season in England injured and looks set to leave the club on loan to Preston North End.

The smart thing to do is to send him out on loan for the whole of the next campaign so that he can get the game time his development needs.

With that in mind, Liverpool must buy a new right-back in this transfer window who will come into the team instead of Trent.

The Reds may not want to spend too much money, but every club in the Premier League have done so, and they will be left behind if they keep pinching pennies.

Their best option is to go out and buy a world-class full-back like Achraf Hakimi, who will deliver at both ends of the field.

However, if Trent is moved into midfield, they might target a more defensive right-back to cover for him at the back.

Get the best out of Nunez

Darwin Nunez moved to Liverpool last summer as one of the coveted strikers in the world, and he was expected to compete with Erling Haaland as one of the Premier League’s best strikers.

However, he ended his first season in England with just nine goals and three assists in 29 league matches.

One admirable thing about Nunez is that he is one of the best in England in terms of finding the right positions on the pitch.

The Uruguayan misses so many chances in games, but it is great that he gets into position to get these chances.

Klopp needs to work on his positioning and get the striker more settled in games so he can hit the target better.

He scored 26 league goals in his last season at Benfica and was remarkable in their Champions League run, which made Liverpool to add him to their squad.

It is clear to see the attacker will eventually come good for the Reds; Klopp just has to find a way to get the best from his expensive striker.

If he does that, Liverpool can challenge to win the Premier League and other trophies in the next campaign.
