Liverpool vs Chelsea and must-win games for the Reds in February

20/01/2024

Liverpool is looking to be crowned the champions of England this summer, which would be the second time in four years.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have shocked most football followers with their re-emergence as title challengers this term.

Last season, Liverpool finished the campaign outside the Premier League’s top four and missed out on a place in the Champions League.

It was a dismal campaign, thanks to losing almost all their midfielders to constant injuries.

They even signed Arthur Melo from Juventus to solve that problem, and the Brazilian broke his leg too and was injured for a long time.

If you ask some Liverpool supporters, they will say the 2022/2023 campaign was cursed, and their team just needed to survive it.

In the summer, the Reds reconstructed their midfield and signed some good young players in that position.

While being good and talented lads, we all expected them to take their time before blossoming and becoming very useful to the team.

In other words, Liverpool had no business challenging to win the Premier League or any other competition this term.

However, by the new year, the Reds are at the top of the standings, and at least two points separate them from Manchester City in second with 18 games to go.

We are now bracing ourselves for another battle between two of the Premier League’s top clubs in the last few seasons.

There is still a long way to go before a title winner is decided, but Liverpool is now in the race, and we look at some of their upcoming Premier League fixtures with the best match tickets because of their importance.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

Liverpool and Chelsea are big rivals, and games between both clubs are always very exciting.

At the start of the term, they faced each other in the first fixture of the campaign as both teams fielded some new players.

The game lived up to expectations and ended in a goalless draw, which was not a bad way to start the football year.

However, both clubs have since enjoyed contrasting fortunes as Liverpool challenges for the league while Chelsea languishes in midtable.

Mauricio Pochettino’s players have been doing well in the last few weeks, and they seem to be finding the chemistry and resilience they need to win games.

However, Liverpool knows they cannot lose this game, and now is the wrong time to start dropping league points if they want to win the league.

At Anfield, they have the support of their fans and will be supported to defeat Chelsea by the final whistle, they cannot let their supporters down.

All the last five competitive games between these clubs have ended in a draw, with two of the last three league meetings ending goalless.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Arsenal is one of the clubs challenging Liverpool for the league crown, and when action resumes this month, the Gunners have to start winning.

Losing to West Ham and Fulham in back to back league games has halted Arsenal’s momentum and made the Gunners fall further behind their rivals on the league table.

Liverpool were a bogey team for Arsenal for several seasons, especially under Arsene Wenger when Jurgen Klopp came to the Premier League.

Games between these clubs are entertaining, but Liverpool somehow mostly wins. But Mikel Arteta is changing that.

Last season, the Gunners won their home leg of this game 3-2 and before holding Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

This term, they played another 1-1 draw at Anfield and will look to beat Liverpool in this reverse fixture at the Emirates.

However, that would be much easier said than done because Liverpool is in top shape and are ready to be the champions of England.

Additionally, the Reds have already defeated Arsenal at the Emirates in 2024, with Klopp’s side winning their FA Cup match 2-0 in London against a wasteful Arsenal side.

Arsenal will hardly scare Liverpool before any game, but this is a fixture the Reds could realistically lose, especially if Mohamed Salah misses it.

Liverpool vs Burnley

Burnley were unstoppable in the Championship last season as Vincent Kompany helped them to secure a return to the Premier League.

Fans were excited about having them in the top flight because of their interesting style of play, which we all expected to see more often when they are in the Premier League.

However, life has been hard for them in England’s top flight and it is difficult to see them survive the drop.

The Clarets and Blues will wish they do not have to face Liverpool in the run-in, but that is not the case.

Regardless of their other results, Liverpool must win when they face Burnley, and it will be difficult for the outcome to be positive for Kompany’s men.

The Reds have won all their last five matches against Burnley, including the reverse of this fixture, and this will be another victory for the title challengers.

Brentford vs Liverpool

Brentford has been a tough team for most clubs to face since they returned to the Premier League, and Liverpool knows this.

The Bees has struggled in the last few months, but the return of Ivan Toney from a lengthy ban is expected to change that.

The striker was the third-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season with 20 goals behind Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Toney’s return to the team adds a new dimension to the game and gives Liverpool something more to worry about.

The Reds know Brentford are a tough team to face, but they have hardly been spectacular this season.

Liverpool won the reverse of this fixture and has three wins from the last four teams they have faced the Bees.

It does not mean this fixture would be easier because every match is unique, but Klopp’s men know they must earn all the points against struggling opponents to be champions.

Liverpool vs Luton Town

Liverpool will end the month of February with this fixture against Luton and would be eager to right the wrongs of the reverse fixture.

Most people will point at the loss to Tottenham at the start of this season as the fixure that has affected Liverpool’s season the most, but failing to collect all three points against Luton in the first leg was a bad outcome.

The Reds could easily have lost that game against a brave Luton side, but Luis Diaz, whose father had been kidnapped at the time, came off the bench to score a late leveller for them.

Liverpool played well, but Darwin Nunez was shockingly poor as he broke the record for the number of chances missed in a single game.

The Uruguayan still fails to take most of his chances, but when Luton visits Anfield for this match, we expect the Reds to win.

Town is battling for their lives in the Premier League, and they need league points just as Liverpool does, but we do not see them coming close to earning even a point from this game, considering how important a win is to Liverpool.
