Who are the Serie A youngsters to enjoy in 2024?

02/01/2024

Serie A is one of the top five European leagues and last season it showed it could be a quality competition after an Italian team was in the final of every European competition.

Inter Milan challenged Manchester City in the Champions League final, while AS Roma was in the Europa League final and Fiorentina faced West Ham in the Europa Conference League final.

Their participation at that stage of the competition was a huge advert for Italian football and they are looking to build on it this term.

Three of the four clubs from that nation who participated in the Champions League group stage are in the round of 16.

It remains to be seen if any of them will reach the final like last season, but back home, there is an interesting revolution going on.

Italian clubs typically rely on experienced players and have been guilty of ignoring the young talents at their disposal for a long time.

This is why the top youngsters on the continent do not fancy joining an Italian club, knowing that they will hardly get the chance to play often.

But this term, teams have relied on youngsters a lot and most of them have done well to justify why fans should buy Serie A tickets to watch them.

In 2024, more of them will impress and we have named the youngsters to watch in the new year.

Radu Dragusin, Genoa

Dragusin was quickly identified as a top talent when he was a youngster at Juventus and was promoted to their first team.

Several clubs showed an interest in his signature, but he stayed at Juve, only to be used as a sweetener to sign Andrea Cambiaso at the start of last season.

He spent the term with Genoa in Serie B and helped them to gain promotion back to the top flight this term.

Dragusin is still just 21, but he is now one of the most reliable defenders in the league and has been linked with a move to Tottenham among other top clubs.

Giorgio Scalvini, Atalanta

Scalvini is the latest in the long list of talents that are being groomed by Atalanta and the defender is one of the best in his generation.

He broke onto the scene before 18 and has steadily improved under the guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini.

As he is being coached by one of the best talent managers in the country, he is almost guaranteed to improve.

In the last few transfer windows, several top clubs have been linked with a move for the 20-year-old, including Juventus and Bayern Munich.

He is a reason you should buy Atalanta match tickets to watch their game as he dazzles whenever he is on the pitch.

Matias Soule, Frosinone

Soule was sent out on loan to Frosinone by Juventus in the summer because he hardly got game time at the Allianz Stadium.

The Argentinian has been doing well in their youth team and his next step was to move out on loan.

Sending him to the right club was very important and the Bianconeri were more than lucky to have done business with Frosinone.

Soule has been a bright spark in their campaign and will be one of the key reasons that they will maintain their top-flight status.

He has been so good that Italy wanted him to play for their national team, but he chose Argentina.

At the end of the first half of the season, the attacker has seven goals and one assist in 16 league games.

Joshua Zirkzee, Bologna

Joshua Zirkzee has been around the European football scene for some time thanks to his spell at Bayern Munich, but the Dutchman is still just 22.

He is now enjoying one of the best spells of his career at Bologna who are threatening to break into the top four.

Thiago Motta is a top manager and has done an amazing job at Bologna this term, but players like Zirkzee are the reason his team is performing above expectations.

He has seven goals and two assists at the end of the first half of the season and he is a player who we expect to keep improving.

Bologna’s style of play suits him, so it is hard not to see him continue to perform brilliantly for them in the second half of the season.

Andrea Colpani, Monza

When all the top clubs in Italy want to add you to their squad, it shows you simply are a superb player who should be taken seriously.

That is the case for Monza’s Colpani who has drawn comparisons with some of the finest Italian midfield legends.

The 24-year-old is one of the reasons Monza has thrived in the Italian top-flight and his performances have made the likes of Juventus show an interest in his signature.

Colpani will want to play for such a big club in the future, but he has to do better to show he deserves a chance at the top side.

This second half of the season offers him a chance to make that happen and he will be a reason more fans will follow Monza.

Cyril Ngonge, Hellas Verona

Ngonge has been a bright light for Verona this season and is a reason their match tickets sell out.

The Belgian who is adept at playing as an attacking midfielder and on the wing hands Verona a very big option when he is fit to play.

He is 23 and has so much more development to do. He has scored 5 goals in the first half of the season, and if he scores the same number or more in the second half, this will be an amazing term for him.

However, that will also make it hard for Verona to keep him in the summer as the top clubs around will look to snap him up.

Kenan Yildiz, Juventus

Juventus has often relied on experienced players, especially under Max Allegri who is in his second spell at the club.

He has been forced to look inward by the club's precarious financial situation and one of the gems he has discovered so far is Yildiz.

2024 will be a big year for the Turkish talent who started Juve’s last two games of 2023 and has already debuted for the Turkey national team at just 18.

With Euro 2024 coming up in the summer, Yildiz will want to play often so that he will be named in the Turkey squad for the competition.

Luka Romero, AC Milan

Romero left Lazio for AC Milan in the summer because he needed more game time, but Milan signed other top players from around Europe.

This means he has still not gotten as much game time as he wants, but the 19-year-old Argentinian still has time.

In the second half of the season, we expect him to get more game time in a Milan shirt and he will make an impact for the Rossoneri.

Valentín Carboni, Monza

Carboni has been a fine talent since his U19 days and he was sent by Inter Milan on loan to Monza this season.

The highlight of his campaign is that stunning goal against Juventus, which was a show of his technique.

Monza has impressed, but they know they have to maintain the high standard that has kept them in the league and Carboni will be an important contributor to their success in 2024.
