Bayern Munich or Bayer Leverkusen: Who will win the Bundesliga?

20/01/2024

This is one of the best Bundesliga seasons we have ever witnessed, as Bayer Leverkusen refuses to give up on their dreams of becoming the champions of Germany.

For a decade, Bayern have been the champions of Germany, triumphing even when it seemed another team would win the league.

Over the years, the likes of Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach have tried to become champions ahead of Bayern but ultimately failed and finished second in the league standings.

Bayern is the best and biggest club in German football which is why most fans are still skeptical about Leverkusen’s chance of winning the league this season.

However, after 17 league games, Leverkusen remains at the top of the standings, and they do not seem like they will drop from that spot soon.

Xabi Alonso has developed a team that has forgotten how to lose a game, and they have been unbeaten in all competitions this season.

Leverkusen is in the running to win the league, cup and the Europa League, which is remarkable.

We have watched them win games that people expected them to lose, and it is time to see them as serious title challengers.

However, that does not mean Bayern is no longer the best equipped team in the German top flight.

The Bavarians bolstered their squad with Harry Kane in the summer, and the Englishman has been unstoppable.

He is relentlessly scoring goals almost every time he steps on the pitch, and that has kept Bayern close to the top of the league standings, but Leverkusen has refused to allow Bayern take control of the race.

As the days pass, they are inching closer to winning the league, making the Bundesliga an exciting competition to buy tickets from vetted resellers on Seatsnet.

It is the second time in back-to-back seasons that Bayern has faced serious challenge to their crown as the champions of Germany.

Last season, Borussia Dortmund took the title race to the final day of the campaign before losing the crown to Bayern. Will Leverkusen do better and become champions of Germany? We all wait to see how this race will end.

Will experience play an important role?

Bayer has some of the finest young players in Europe in their squad, and we expect clubs to fight to sign some of them in the summer.

However, they are not an experience bunch and have been winning games mostly because of their capabilities.

In the summer, Alonso made two key signings because of experience. He bagged Alex Grimaldo on a free transfer from Benfica, which is an outstanding piece of business.

Leverkusen also splashed the cash to sign former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, who is one of the most experienced players in Germany.

Both players have been pivotal to the team’s success this season, which explains why experience matters.

However, none has experience is winning the Bundesliga, which is a huge advantage for Bayern.

They have won the last ten titles, and most of the players who helped them to become champions in recent terms remain in their squad.

Harry Kane failed to win trophies at Tottenham, but the England captain’s experience in European football is not in doubt.

Kane has won the Golden Boot at the World Cup, the Premier League and is England’s leading goalscorer.

A lack of experience was the main reason Borussia Dortmund failed to win the Bundesliga last season, as Bayern were named the surprised champions on the last day of the term.

This could also play an important role in the title race, and in the coming weeks, the lack of experience from most players in the Leverkusen squad could begin to show in their performances.

This is the business end of the season, and teams will continue to battle hard to stay relevant. When the going gets tough, it is the experience in the squad that will help teams to win.

Who has the best-equipped squad?

Bayer Leverkusen signed some relatively unknown players in the summer who have turned out to be successful signings, most notably, Victor Boniface.

Only a few people knew about the Nigerian before he moved to Germany, but he won four consecutive Rookie of the Month awards before he suffered an injury.

His form means the likes of Adam Hlozek and Patrik Schick hardly get chances to play, but they will get more now that he is away.

Even in defence and midfield, Alonso has some top players he can trust to deliver in matches.

However, Bayern Munich has the best squad in the German top flight, and they continue to strengthen their group.

In this transfer window, they have signed Eric Dier to bolster a defence that already has the likes of Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Light, and Kim Min-jae, among others.

In midfield they have world class players like Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Jamal Musiala, among others.

While Harry Kane is supported by the likes of Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller, Mathys Tel, and others.

Bayern has the stronger and better squad on paper, which gives them an advantage, but we have seen so far that it makes no sense to underestimate Leverkusen.

What they lack in experience and perhaps quality, they make up for it with a desire to win at all costs.

This could prove to be the key to success for them this term and make life hard for Bayern in the race between both clubs for the championship.

Will Bayer replace Borussia Dortmund?

For years, Borussia Dortmund was the main challengers to Bayern for the Bundesliga title, and we all expected them to win it last season.

BVB needed to win at home on the final day of the season, but they failed to do so and ended the term second after picking up a painful draw against Mainz.

That result shocked most football followers around Europe who had expected BVB to secure a home victory and become the champions of Germany.

Not winning the title last term has affected them in this campaign, and they risk finishing the season outside the top four.

Dortmund are in transition after losing Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, which explains their struggles this term.

However, it is too early to consider Leverkusen the team that will replace them as the main rivals to Bayern Munich.

This is the first season in years that Bayer has looked like winning the league ahead of Bayern, but BVB has always challenged them for the league title.

They could recover in this second half of the season and challenge for the crown again despite how far Leverkusen have come.

For Bayer to be considered the next top club in Germany, they must challenge for the title for several seasons.

To achieve this, they will have to keep Alonso as their manager and resist the temptation to sell their key players in the summer.

Keeping the same group for a long time will make success easier in the future, but Leverkusen is a team that sells its best stars. Alonso could also be poached by another club in the summer, or a few seasons down the line.
