Champions League round of 16 tickets you should buy

20/12/2023

The Champions League has reached the round of 16 stage, with several top teams making it to this round of the competition.

Arsenal and Manchester City were the only English teams to survive the group stages, which was a surprise because England has had a team in the competition's final for much of the last decade.

Spain had five teams in the group stages; four of them made the knockout stages, which is impressive. Will one of the Spanish sides win the competition this season?

Three Italian teams are also in the round of 16, after AC Milan failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the competition in a hardly surprising outcome.

But it promises to remain interesting in the competition despite the absence of these teams, and it will be intriguing to see which team makes it to the quarterfinals.

Fans who buy Champions League tickets know the matches in the round of 16 that start in February will all be key games for the clubs left in the competition, so there will hardly be a dull moment.

But which of the Champions League round of 16 tickets must you get your hands on?

PSG vs Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad were in superb form in La Liga last season, which earned them a place in the Spanish top four and they were expected to struggle in the Champions League.

However, without David Silva, the Spanish side has been a delight to watch in the Champions League.

They topped their group, which had Inter Milan, finalists from last season, to reach this stage of the competition where they will face PSG.

PSG has been one of the top clubs in Europe for several seasons partly because of their investment in world-class players like Kylian Mbappe, among others.

But the Parisians have not been very impressive in Europe and struggled this season in the Champions League.

After suffering losses to Newcastle United and AC Milan, they had to wait until the final group game to confirm their qualification for the knockout stage of the Champions League.

They are not having the best seasons, and Sociedad will be happy with the draw because the Spanish side can easily defeat the Parisians to reach the quarterfinals over two legs.

PSG won just two group games, while Sociedad won three and lost none of the six.

Lazio vs Bayern Munich

Lazio qualified as the second team in their group and drew Bayern Munich, who are considered one of the favourites to be the winners of the Champions League this season.

Bayern has one of the strongest squads in the world and Thomas Tuchel has a very good reputation in Europe.

He reached the competition's final with PSG in 2020 and won it as Chelsea's manager the following season.

Lazio is one of the three remaining Italian teams, with Maurizio Sarri's side managing to reach this stage of the competition ahead of the likes of Feyenoord and Celtic.

They were in fine form in Serie A last season, which earned them a place in the top four but have been dismal in this campaign.

The Italians know they have their work cut out in winning this game, but they are an attacking team and watched as Copenhagen frustrated Bayern Munich in the group stage.

That could help them find a way to stop Harry Kane and his teammates from making progress in the competition, but it will be easier said than done.

Napoli vs Barcelona

Napoli qualified alongside Real Madrid from their group and will face another Spanish team in the round of 16.

The Italian champions have struggled to defend their league title this season and could even finish outside the top four domestically.

But this game offers them a chance to make progress in Europe as they did last season, and they would fancy their chance against a struggling Barcelona.

Barca was also the champion of Spain last term, but Xavi Hernandez's side has struggled to come up with the goods for much of this campaign.

The former midfielder has watched his team struggle to defend their league crown, with Girona and Real Madrid having a better season.

In Europe, they topped their group ahead of FC Porto but were never spectacular in any game.

This makes them a team Napoli can beat, so Victor Osimhen and his teammates will be fearless in facing the Catalans.

The pressure will be on Barcelona and if Napoli can secure a good win in the first leg in Naples, we expect them to go to also Spain and get a result.

Barca has time to get into better shape since this round of games does not start until February and it will be interesting to see which of them will win the matches, but Napoli is an opponent that Barcelona cannot underestimate.

Inter Milan Atletico Madrid

Two of Europe's solid teams meet when Italian league leaders Inter Milan face Atletico de Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.

Inter reached the final of the competition last season and were impressive until that stage, where they met Manchester City and lost.

Even in defeat, it was a close game and Simone Inzaghi's side did well against the Premier League champions.

This season, they faced tough competition from Real Sociedad in their group and finished second, but level on points with the Spanish side.

Atletico topped their group, which had another Italian side, Lazio, and will fancy their chance of toppling Inter over two legs.

Inter is the favourite to become the champions of Italy and have been unstoppable in their domestic competition this season.

Reaching this stage of the Champions League shows they are also prepared to do well in Europe again and Atletico will know this.

This game will be tough for both sides because Atleti is notoriously strong at the back, just like Inter Milan has been this season and Lautaro Martinez is currently in the form of his life.

FC Porto vs Arsenal

Arsenal is back in the Champions League after at least six years away from the competition and has instantly become one of the favourites to win it.

Mikel Arteta's side was brilliant in the group stages, allowing them to qualify easily in a group with Lens, PSV and Sevilla.

It is not the toughest of groups, but Arsenal has just returned to the competition and we could have understood if they struggled.

They were terrific, especially at home, where they swept opponents aside repeatedly and finished as the top club.

Mikel Arteta's men have been rewarded with a round of 16 games against FC Porto, and it will be one of the most interesting matches of this round of the competition.

The Portuguese side finished second in their group against Barcelona and have traditionally been strong opponents in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The second leg at the Emirates will be a key game, but Arsenal will also avoid a defeat in Portugal, which will put them in a comfortable position when they play at home.
