The Premier League team with the best Champions League draw

11/09/2023

The Premier League has had a team in the final of the Champions League in five of the last six editions of the competition, which shows how big the English top flight is on the continent.

Almost every football fan considers the English top flight as the best competition in the world and other European clubs believe it is the real European Super League.

The Premier League clubs have some of the best academies in the world and this helps them to develop world-class talents for clubs in the competition and outside it.

However, the Premier League clubs have not dominated European football in the last few seasons because they have the best talents or academies.

They have mostly done this because they have some of the richest owners who are more than happy to splash the cash and improve players.

The most expensive footballer in the world does not play in England, but players see the Premier League as the holy grail of European football and even the second division in England pays higher wages than some top flights.

This season’s Champions League will see four clubs represent the Premier League in the group stages and the draws have already been made.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea missed out on qualifying for the competition in the last term, with the absence of the Reds being the most surprising.

In their absence, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Arsenal will play in Europe’s top club competition this term alongside Manchester City.

Without Liverpool, it is easy for people to conclude that only City can reach the final among the Premier League clubs, but which of them can even make it out of the group stages?

Fans of each of these clubs have bought as many Champions League tickets as possible to watch their beloved club in the competition again.

This is one reason we can confidently trust that these clubs will make the right impact in it, as English fans know how to support their clubs in every game, especially when played at home.

Manchester City

After winning the treble last season, Manchester City would be chasing even more history by winning the Champions League again this season.

The Citizens also won the Premier League and were rewarded with a group that most football fans would believe is an easy draw.

The English champions have been drawn in the same group as Red Star Belgrade, Young Boys and RB Leipzig.

This is one of the easiest groups in the competition this season for any heavyweight and City can be sure that they will end as group leaders.

Young Boys hardly have European pedigree and the two matches between them and City should easily be wins for the PL side.

Red Star recently defeated Liverpool in a Champions League group stage game at their hostile stadium, but we expect them to fold at the sight of Erling Haaland and his teams.

RB Leipzig has been doing well in Germany and Europe, but will struggle to cope with City, as always.

The head-to-head between them City is not close, with their most recent game ending in a 7-0 win for the English side in the Champions League last season.

We expect the Germans to fold again and City should easily win the matches between them by a wide margin.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United secured a shock ticket for the Champions League this season, leaving Liverpool empty-handed after the Reds made a late charge towards the top-four place.

The Magpies are returning to the competition for the first time in over a decade and know the task ahead is tough.

Because they are not frequent in the competition and the position they finished last season, they were not handed a favourable pot during the draw and probably have the hardest group among the Premier League sides.

Newcastle has been placed in the same group as AC Milan, PSG and Borussia Dortmund and they seem helpless in such a tough group.

AC Milan reached the semi-final stage of the competition last season before losing to their city rivals Inter and is one of the traditional powerhouses in European football.

This means they are one club that will make life tough for the Magpies in their group.

PSG is one of the strongest clubs in the continent and is expected to go for the title again despite losing Lionel Messi and Neymar in the last transfer window.

Luis Enrique has been tasked with a huge rebuilding job at the club, but the gaffer knows he must make an impact in the Champions League.

PSG has Kylian Mbappe, Marco Asensio, Fabian Ruiz, and Marquinhos, among others, in their squad.

These are some of the best players in their position in Europe and Newcastle will struggle in the matches against them in this group.

Borussia Dortmund reached the final of the UCL in 2013 and were just minutes away from winning that competition under Jurgen Klopp.

Since then, they have remained one of the top clubs in the continent and will make life harder for Newcastle United in this group as well.

From several indications, Newcastle will be proud if they finish third in this group and secure a Europa League spot.

But they have shown in recent campaigns that they can achieve this if they are at their very best.

Manchester United

Erik Ten Hag reached two finals and finished inside the top four with Manchester United in his first season as the club’s manager.

The Dutchman has made them one of the top clubs in the Premier League again and would look to make an impression in the Champions League as well.

United has been put in the same group as Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Copenhagen, which could suggest they have a better draw than Newcastle United.

On paper, United should qualify for the knockout round with Bayern, but Galatasaray has a superb squad, with Wilfried Zaha and Mauro Icardi as two of their key men.

The Turkish side is a dangerous team and United cannot underestimate them in any way or form.

Copenhagen went through some tough challenges in the qualifying round before making the group stages and could also upset the odds, but we expect the Red Devils to deal with them with more ease.

Harry Kane was expected to move to Manchester United but joined Bayern. The England captain will relish the chance to show the Red Devils what they missed out on when Bayern plays them over two legs.

Arsenal

Arsenal is making a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2017 and the Gunners are expecting to leave their mark and show they are truly back.

After nearly winning the league last season, they have added some fine players to their squad and will compete against Sevilla, Lens and PSV in the group stages.

Mikel Arteta’s men are the biggest team in this group, but it is not smart for them to underestimate other members.

Sevilla qualified by winning the last Europa League and has pedigree on the continental stage.

Lens was one of the top sides in France last season and gave PSG a run for their money before finishing the campaign in the second position.

The Ligue 1 side has some of the best players in the French top flight and would play with less expectations, so we expect them to give the Gunners some problems when both clubs meet.

PSV faced Arsenal in the group stage of the Europa League last season and proved they are not a team that fears any opponent.

They will similarly be in a great spirit when they clash in the Champions League and the Dutchmen will hope to repeat their home win against the Gunners in Europe last season.

The Champions League will be tough for all English clubs, but the standard of the Premier League means we expect their teams to do well during the campaign.

But they must not underestimate their opponents no matter where they are coming from.
