Euro 2024 favourites profile: England

28/08/2023

England is one of the favourites to win Euro 2024, and for good reason, considering the pool of talent Gareth Southgate has to work with.

The Three Lions manager has done a superb job since becoming their boss and has taken them closer to winning a title than anyone else in the last decade.

England's last major honour remains winning the 1966 World Cup, but you do sense that will change soon if they continue to deliver top performance in every game.

Because the Premier League is the best domestic competition in the world, we all expect the English national team to do well in competitions around the world.

Under Southgate, many players have developed through the U21s to the senior squad, and the ex-Middlesborough manager knows how to select the best players available to him.

England has seen Harry Kane move from the Premier League to the German Bundesliga after Bayern Munich splashed the cash to add him to their squad.

Jude Bellingham is also tearing up La Liga after joining Real Madrid, so it is not just the players available in the Premier League who will be in the national team for Euro 2024.

This means England is shaping up well for the Euros and could be the champions in Germany if everything goes to plan.

It would be one of the most unpredictable Euros ever, and that is one reason fans will troop into Germany to watch their country play.

UEFA Euro 2024 tickets are already on sale, and everyone needs a reason to grab their copies as soon as possible.

The England national team will make fans buy even more, and because Germany is not so far from their country, most English fans already plan to be on holiday there during the competition.

In this article, we look at the English national team closely and discuss the various positions in the Three Lions squad, including their options for each position that makes them one country that could win the Euros.

Goalkeepers

England has always been blessed with a safe pair of hands, and there is currently an embarrassment of riches in that department in their squad.

Southgate has remained loyal to Jordan Pickford despite Everton's struggle to keep their Premier League status in the last three seasons.

The Englishman is not the tallest, but Pickford is one of England's best in terms of individual performances and is one reason Everton has remained in the Premier League.

However, it is only a matter of time before he loses that spot as Nick Pope of Newcastle and Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale continue to impress for their clubs.

Both goalies will play in the Champions League this season, and Southgate cannot continue to ignore their importance to their clubs for long.

It does not make so much sense that England has goalies who play Champions League football but continue to rely on Pickford, who constantly fights relegation.

James Trafford is a new option emerging after his heroics for the U21 side at the last Euros they won.

He is now the number one at Burnley and will be followed closely by the national team coaches. If he does well in this campaign, he could be on the plane as one of the three goalies in the squad for the Euros.

Defenders

England is blessed with some of the best defenders in the game, and it is one position that Southgate struggles to pick players.

Premier League clubs are constantly developing and buying English defenders for their teams, which improves the national team's pool of players.

There is not an exhaustible list of defenders that we can name for the Three Lions, but one sure thing is that Southgate will have no problems picking some for the competition.

From Harry Maguire to John Stones and Kyle Walker, he can name several experienced defenders who have been a part of his group for a long time.

However, before the competition kicks off, some new talents are expected to come through the ranks as well, with Lewi Colwill, Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori all working hard to get a chance to be on that plane to Germany.

Southgate is notoriously loyal to his players and will likely pick Maguire, even if the Manchester United man struggles to play at Old Trafford.

The gaffer trusts him, and that is what really matters at the moment, but the defender may not be a starter. Depending on how others develop, he may not even be on the plane for Euro 2024 unless his performance significantly improves and he gets back into the Manchester United team.

Midfielders

Midfield is one spot where England probably has their best players, and there will be more than enough options to build a winning team for the Three Lions.

Southgate has consistently worked with some fine midfielders, and his loyalty to a certain group made the likes of James Maddison struggle to get into the team.

But the England manager will have more than enough midfield talents to pick from and probably will be confused about who to choose.

Apart from Jude Bellingham, England has Declan Rice, who is now Arsenal's record signing and the most expensive British signing.

Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Eberechi Eze, and Conor Gallagher, among others, are other options the England boss will have at his disposal.

The team that won the latest European U21 competition has the likes of Harvey Elliott, Morgan Gibbs-White and Emile Smith Rowe.

Some of these players could be ready to get regular game time for the senior side by next year, and Southgate will pick them for the competition.

Attackers

In attack, England would be led by the new Bayern Munich signing Kane, who has proven to be one of the world's best strikers for much of his career.

The England captain won the Golden Boot at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and is already the country's all-time leading goal-scorer with 58 goals from 84 matches.

This stat shows that Kane remains a key figure for his country and will be a major part of their success at Euro 2024.

However, he is not the only attacker England has, and they have an abundance of riches in that department.

The Three Lions can call on Callum Wilson, Ivan Toney and Raheem Sterling if they cannot get hold of Kane.

Olie Watkins, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are other players they can call on in attack.

Not all of these players would be on the plane to Germany, but these options show why England has no reason not to win the next Euros.

Other countries would be in the championship with world-class players, but England has to be one of the nations with the best chance of emerging as champions.

Coach

Gareth Southgate was a seasoned professional who did not make so much of an impact in management in club football.

However, he has made a name for himself, coaching the England team from the youth level, and he feels now is the time to win a competition with this team.

England FA have supported him through the years as he guides the team through arguably its most successful period in recent history, and it is only right if he repays that with a trophy.

Some of his players will not be available for the 2026 World Cup, and if the team does poorly in Germany, he will probably also not have a job in that competition.
