Why Real Madrid will retain the La Liga title for another season

17/07/2024

Real Madrid won La Liga and the Champions League last season, continuing to prove to be the biggest club on the continent.

The Madrid side now has 36 league titles and 15 Champions League crowns, among other trophies.

Florentino Perez has made them an unstoppable force in the last few seasons, and we now expect them to compete to win the top titles every season.

To their credit, Barcelona has done well in stopping Madrid from winning La Liga in several campaigns and remains the only club that can stop them from winning the Spanish top-flight title.

Under Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid has also had their hands on the title. Still, Atletico is simply too inconsistent to stop Madrid, and Barca is Los Blancos's real challenger.

The 2024/2025 league season will be another important campaign for both clubs, and Madrid will be eager to ensure they win the league title again.

La Liga tickets are selling fast because both clubs are involved, and the title race in the upcoming season will mainly be between them.

However, Girona proved last term that Madrid’s supremacy could be threatened, even though they eventually lost their way in the title race. Why do we think Madrid will likely retain their league crown for another season?

Barcelona is the only real competition.

Spain just won Euro 2024, and La Liga had the most players on its team, scattered across different clubs in the Spanish top flight. So, there is more to the Spanish top flight than Barcelona and Real Madrid.

We already discussed how Girona shocked us in the last campaign with their impressive performance in the league and Atletico has won some titles as well.

However, judging by the quality of their squad and transfer activities as well, the only real competition Madrid will face next season will come from Barcelona.

The Catalans have arguably the second best squad in La Liga and has just named a new manager to their bench, so we expect so much from them.

Hansi Flick was in charge of one of the best Bayern Munich sides we have seen as they won the Champions League and Bundesliga in 2020.

He will make Barca a tough team to face in the league, and they might also fight for the title, but it is hard to see another club challenge Madrid for it.

Los Blancos might struggle in their games against Barcelona, but they could win the other fixtures, thanks to their star-studded squad.

Mbappe is a guaranteed winner.

One of the world’s best players, Kylian Mbappe, starts his long-awaited spell as a Real Madrid player this season after completing his free transfer to the Spanish club.

Mbappe has been on Madrid’s radar for almost a decade since he broke onto the scene at AS Monaco in 2016 and he has been ever-improving since.

The Frenchman has scored 287 goals in just 380 career games, and he is still just 25, so there is more to come.

With Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo now out of Europe and perhaps also out of the running to win the world’s biggest individual honours, Mbappe will be keen on winning the Ballon d’Or.

The Frenchman’s arrival at Madrid makes them even harder to play against, and he is a natural winner who will score the goals needed to bring success to Bernabeu.

Mbappe has won the French Ligue 1 seven times out of the last eight seasons and he won the World Cup in 2018, reaching the final of the same competition in Qatar two years ago.

Madrid has added one of the most efficient players in world football to their squad, and it will be tough for any club to stop them from winning La Liga again.

Endrick will also join him in Spain and the Brazilian prodigy will be a member of an attack that also includes Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.

Madrid fans and some neutrals will be licking their lips at the prospect of watching the world’s best players at the Bernabeu.

They have the best squad in Europe

We have already covered the arrival of Mbappe and Endrick, but even without both players, Madrid won the league and Champions League last season.

Over the last few terms, Madrid has gradually assembled the best squad in world football, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga and Fede Valverde, among others, making them arguably the best team in the world.

The only reason Madrid has added Mbappe and Endrick to their squad is because Los Blancos is chasing perfection.

The new players take them closer to becoming the perfect team, and how can perfectly imperfect teams stop a perfect one from winning?

Madrid will not retain the La Liga title next season only if new signings like Mbappe and Endrick do not quickly fit into their system.

This happened when they tried to build the Galacticos of the early 2000s, with the likes of Ronaldo de Lima, David Beckham, and Michael Owen, among others, failing to reach the heights fans had expected them to get as a team.

The Ancelotti factor

Carlo Ancelotti is a well-respected manager in world football, and he has earned that respect thanks to the success he has achieved since becoming a coach.

He seems to be in his last spell as a football coach after hinting he will retire at Real Madrid, so he will want two more successful seasons.

Ancelotti has already sealed his reputation as one of the greatest ever coach, and it will be tough for Madrid to find a new manager who is as good as he is in terms of managing world-class players.

Ancelotti has been able to bring the best out of the most talented players in the world with some of the biggest egos in the game.

He is always as cool as a cucumber when he is on the touchline and that is because he trusts his players to deliver on what they had worked on before games.

The Italian manager is probably the biggest reason Madrid has been so successful in recent seasons.

His management of the talent at his disposal next term will play an important role in the success that the team achieves and we can trust him to do a good job.

What or what can stop Real Madrid in Spain?

As we have discussed, it is tough to find a team that can successfully stop Madrid from winning La Liga next term.

Almost every factor seems to be in their favour, but there is no perfect team and rarely do teams have the perfect season.

Madrid can still fall short despite having a squad that seems too good to fail, and some of the reasons they might not win the league include:

Injuries and poor form of key players, slow adaptation of their new signings, and a breaking down of relationship between some players in the dressing room.

Some of these factors are not in the club's control, and they will have to bank on the players continuing to trust each other to achieve success.

The form of their main rivals could also stop them from winning the title. If Barcelona/Atletico Madrid goes on a fantastic winning run under Flick/Simeone and Madrid fails to keep up, Los Blancos could lose the title.

However, all things being equal, Madrid should retain the La Liga title for another year at the end of next season.
