Some of the winners of the January transfer window

06/02/2024

The January transfer window was an important time for clubs across Europe to strengthen their squad ahead of the second half of the term, and some of them did some good business.

In the Premier League, most top clubs shun the market for strengthening their players, but some teams still did well.

The likes of Tottenham and Burnley improved their options with some of the best players they can find on the market, even though it was not easy to find players that could easily make their team stronger.

In Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga and Ligue 1, some teams did their best to ensure their team is stronger than it was before the window.

In this second half of the term, every team will begin to reap the reward of their decision in that window, and it will be interesting to see how things change.

We expect some surprise improvements from clubs across the continent in this second half of the term, but which teams won in the January transfer window?

Aston Villa

Villa had a good first half of the Premier League season, and so many of their players have caught the eye with their performances this term.

Unai Emery has been doing a fantastic job at the Midlands club since he became their manager, and the owners have ensured he gets all the support he needs.

Despite their fine run of form and a considerably strong group, they were still one of the busy clubs in January.

The Villans offloaded Bertrand Traore , and Leander Dendoncker, among others. These players have not made any impact on their team so far.

They also improved their squad with Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough after a protracted negotiation with the Championship club.

Villa ticket buyers now expect their team to make a serious push for a top-four finish.

Nottingham Forest

Forest is facing a serious prospect of getting relegated at the end of this Premier League season, and they could not miss a chance to strengthen their squad further.

Nuno Espirito Santo has just been named their manager, and Forest had to back him with a few new players.

Despite being charged by the FA, they splashed the cash on Matz Sels, while loaning in Giovanni Reyna from Borussia Dortmund and Rodrigo Ribeiro from Sporting Clube.

These players will make them stronger and hopefully secure another season for them in Premier League football.

Tottenham

Spurs started the campaign brightly, then they experienced a deep in form, which plunged them into a little bit of trouble ahead of the second half of the term.

However, their players seem to have bought into the system of Ange Postecoglou and are happy to work for him.

The Lilywhites supported their manager with some new signings last month as he looks to finish his first season in England inside the top four.

Spurs improved their squad with the loan signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, and the German has been in superb form so far.

He flopped at Chelsea, but Spurs believe he suits their system, and he looks comfortable so far.

They also signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa, one of the finest young defenders in Europe at the moment.

They fought off Bayern Munich to sign the youngster, which showed that he truly is an impressive player who should do well in England.

Spurs also offloaded the likes of Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, Japhet Tanganga, Ivan Perisic and Djed Spence, among others. These players were not useful in the first half of the season, and some of them do not have a future at the club.

West Ham

David Moyes won the Europa Conference League with West Ham last season, and this campaign has been more difficult for his team.

The Hammers backed him with a new midfielder in the last transfer window, with Kalvin Phillips joining them, even though he had interest from the likes of Barcelona and Juventus.

However, even more importantly, the Hammers offloaded some players who have not been useful to them this term.

They sold Pablo Fornals to Real Betis and loaned out the likes of Said Benrahma and Thilo Kehrer.

West Ham ticket buyers now expect their team to perform better in the second half of the season and perhaps finish inside the top five.

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have watched Bayer Leverkusen become the main title rival to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga this season and risked finishing the season outside the top four.

They were nearly champions last term, but the likes of Stuttgart and RB Leipzig are making it difficult for them to finish inside the top four in this campaign.

Because of this, they have strengthened their group in the January transfer window, so their performances will improve in the second half of the term.

Their most eye-catching signing in January is the capture of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.

He had been dropped from the United first team after clashing with his manager on social media.

Sancho trained alone for several months, but the Englishman eventually secured a loan return to BVB, where he has had the best time of his career.

He has sprung back to life and has been a regular on the team since he moved to the German club.

Dortmund also captured the signature of Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for the rest of the term, and he too, has been superb so far.

Bayern Munich

With Bayer Leverkusen showing no signs of stopping any time soon, Bayern Munich had to improve their squad in January to avoid further slip-ups in the Bundesliga title race.

They backed Thomas Tuchel with the signing of Eric Dier, Bryan Zaragoza, and Sacha Boey, among other players.

These are some of the finest players at their former clubs, and Dier has looked comfortable after being reunited with Harry Kane.

Bayern Munich fans who buy tickets from trusted resellers on Seatsnet are hopeful Leverkusen will slip-up in the title race and let their team back into it.

Napoli

Napoli has had one of the worst title defence in Europe in this campaign as they struggled through two managers in the first half of the season.

They lost Victor Osimhen to the AFCON, and the Nigerian is even leaving them at the end of this season.

To rescue their season, they spent some money in the transfer market to make their group stronger.

Napoli did not sign a striker to replace Osimhen, a decision we expect them to make at the end of this season.

However, they improved their squad with Cyril Ngonge, Hamed Junior Traorè, and Leander Dendoncker.

Fans will buy their tickets for the rest of the term hopeful that their team will end the campaign well and probably return to the top four by the summer.

When Osimhen returns they will be even stronger, but they have done a good job in the January transfer window, and we can expect them to end this season well.

Juventus

Juventus spent most of the last few months scouting for a new midfielder to add to their squad in the January transfer window.

After losing Paul Pogba and Nicolo Fagioli to suspensions until the end of the season, the Old Lady had to act on the transfer market.

However, following the emergence of Kenan Yildiz as an important member of their squad, Juve looked more assured towards the end of last year.

This prompted them to abandon their pursuit of a new midfielder in the January transfer window.

They stole a march on Inter Milan to add Tiago Djalo to their squad and bolster an already strong defence.

It seemed they would not improve their already depleted midfield, but Cristiano Giuntoli signed Carlos Alcaraz on loan for them hours before the transfer window shut.

Juve will hope to remain in the running to be champions in this second half of the season as Inter continues to lead the race, and Alcaraz will be an important player for them.
