Who are the favourites for relegation in the Premier League in 2025

13/08/2024

The Premier League is arguably the biggest competition in the world and the most competitive top flight worldwide.

The competition has established itself thanks to brilliant PR work and the presence of some of Europe’s best players.

Clubs in England’s top flight pay some of the best salaries, and the teams in the competition earn big bucks by just competing in it.

The team that finishes last in the Premier League makes more money from competing in the league than the team that finishes first in the Italian Serie A.

This is why every team in the Championship wants to play in the Premier League, and the team that wins the Championship playoff finals is worth £305m.

This amount is far more than the money several clubs will make if they win their top flight, so gaining promotion to the English top flight is a big deal.

The Championship remains one of the most competitive leagues in the world, even though it is only the English second tier.

Finishing inside the two top means achieving automatic qualification to the Premier League, while finishing in the other four places below the first two qualifies you for the playoff semi-final.

Last season, Leicester City won the Championship and Ipswich shockingly finished second, thanks to some great work from former Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna.

Southampton defeated Leeds United in the playoff final to join them in the top flight, and their fans are fighting to buy Premier League tickets to watch their team play.

However, will they all survive the drop and which current EPL side could be relegated at the end of the season?

The usual suspects

Every club promoted to the Premier League for the 2023/2024 season was relegated at the end of the campaign, showing that top flight is now harder than ever.

It also means that clubs who have been struggling to get relegated in the previous campaigns survived the drop.

We correctly predicted that Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town would be relegated from the Premier League last season, and they all went down.

However, we also expected some teams, including Everton and Nottingham Forest, to struggle and make the drop if they were not careful.

They remain among the usual suspects, having failed to improve and strengthen their team, so they could struggle again in this campaign.

Unlikely strugglers

Following their impressive season in 2022/2023, we did not expect Brentford to finish so close to the relegation zone in the Premier League last term.

The Bees are one of the well-run clubs in the Premier League, but without their talisman, Ivan Toney, they nearly got relegated.

They have now placed him on the market again because he has one season left in his contract, which could be a big problem for them.

If Toney leaves, Brentford could be relegated at the end of the season, but they are not the only club we can see struggle unexpectedly.

Wolves sold their leading man in attack, Pedro Neto, while Bournemouth could no longer count on Dominic Solanke after he moved to Tottenham.

These two clubs could also struggle in this campaign, and the unpredictable nature of the Premier League means that they could be relegated.

Which teams can be relegated at the end of this season?

Below are the clubs we expect to struggle in this campaign, and three of them could be relegated before the campaign ends.

Nottingham Forest

Forest are like cats who have nine lives because they have survived so much relegation drama to stay in the Premier League for two consecutive seasons.

Since returning to the competition in the 2022/2023 season, they have been struggling with inconsistency, which also means fighting for their lives.

Their inconsistent form means they have entered the final day of the last two seasons unsure of their safety, having finished 16th and 17th in the log on both occasions.

They might not be lucky this season, but fans who buy Nottingham Forest tickets could watch them get relegated.

Everton

Since Carlo Ancelotti left Everton, they have been a shadow of their former selves and have also nearly gotten relegated from the Premier League in the last two seasons.

This summer, their pre-season results are not good enough, but their fans will still buy Everton tickets and Sean Dyche’s team could be heading for more relegation fights again.

Wolves

Wolves have done well under Gary O’Neil, who has proven to be one of the best English managers in the Premier League.

His team plays a brilliant brand of football that relies on being very attacking regardless of the opponent.

Their bold approach has made them one of the exciting teams to follow, but losing their main man, Pedro Neto, will affect them.

Although the Portuguese attacker was often injured while he played for them, his departure leaves a huge void that could see them fall into relegation trouble.

They have also lost Maximilian Kilman who joined West Ham this summer and must bring some reinforcements in the next weeks or they will be in trouble in front of fans who invest in the tickets.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth has looked secure from relegation trouble for several seasons and finished in midtable last term.

We expected them to build on that in this campaign and probably secure a European spot, but they have made a decision that could be fatal.

The Cherries have just sold Dominic Solanke to Tottenham, meaning their main man and top scorer last season is gone.

He was in the running for the Golden Boot and made more fans buy Bournemouth tickets, but he is now gone, and they could regret that decision.

Ipswich Town

Ipswich played some brilliant football in the Championship last season, which put their tickets in high demand.

It ultimately earned them a promotion to the Premier League, and Kieran McKenna would be looking to continue his fine job in the top flight.

However, just as the three promoted clubs found out last season, the Premier League is a tough competition, and they might be sent back down immediately.

Leicester City

Among the promoted clubs, Leicester City seems to have the best chance of staying in the Premier League, considering they won the Championship and most of their players were in their team from their last spell in the top flight.

Leicester City tickets are among the best to buy because the Foxes will play an interesting brand of football under Steve Cooper, but they still have a good chance of getting relegated next summer.

Southampton

Southampton is the last promoted club, and we think the Saints could also be relegated at the end of the term.

This will not affect their ticket sales on Seatsnet because they play an exciting brand of football, but it is hard to see the Saints survive the tough Premier League territory.

Conclusion

Staying in the Premier League is almost a heroic feat nowadays, and we expect some clubs to find it similarly challenging this season.
