Why Inter Milan are the favourites to win Serie A this season

27/08/2023

Inter Milan has been the best club in Serie A for the last few seasons after ending Juventus’ dominance of the league in 2021.

They have not won another league crown after that one, but the Milan side has always competed for top honours at home and on the international stage.

They won the Italian Cup last season and eliminated Juventus along the way before reaching the final of the Champions League, where they lost to Manchester City.

Inter did well under Antonio Conte, and the club was smart to replace the erratic manager with Simone Inzaghi, which is the reason they have remained consistently good until now.

They will show again why they are the best club in the country, and their transfer businesses suggest they know what they want.

The Nerazzurri know to buy Inter Milan tickets, fans need to be assured of terrific performances from the players, and the club must sign the best men on offer in the market.

They have added Marcus Thuram, Emil Audero, Marco Arnautovic, and Carlos Augusto, among others, to their squad in this transfer window and are closing in on signing Benjamin Pavard at the time of this article.

These signings mean they have arguably the strongest squads in the league, and we expect that to show on the pitch, even though this will be one of the toughest Serie A campaigns ever.

Juventus would be without European football, so they have what it takes to go all the way, while AC Milan has also bolstered their squad with some of the best talents in European football.

These two clubs are the main side that will battle Inter for the title, but Inzaghi’s team seems much better prepared to deal with the competition from them, and here are some reasons why.

Simone Inzaghi is the best manager in Serie A

Although he has yet to win the league, Simone Inzaghi is still the best manager in Serie A, considering how much success and stability he has given to the teams he has managed.

For several seasons, his Lazio side thrived as underdogs and won some Italian Cups against the other top sides in the league, which is the reason Inter Milan turned to him to become their manager as soon as Conte left them.

He has met expectations in Milan after winning two cups and two Super Cups with them, and we expect his side to win this league.

He is a master at cups, but Max Allegri at Juve is struggling with his old-fashioned style of football, and Milan’s new players will need time to blend and become a compact team.

While Napoli has lost at least one key player, these limitations make Inter one club with the best chance to win the Italian top flight this season.

Inter has kept their best players

Inter Milan will not have Romelu Lukaku for this season, which is sad because the Belgian looks tailor-made for them.

He has had two spells with the Cup holders, and both were successful, as he won the league for them in 2021 and has some cups under his name.

However, after he betrayed them in this transfer window, they have added Arnautovic to their squad and will run with that.

They have also lost Andre Onana to Manchester United, but they signed Yann Sommer to replace the Cameroonian.

Considering how other clubs have lost key men and have not adequately replaced them, Inter, to a certain degree, has kept their best men.

Their midfield looks intact, even though they have had to replace Marcelo Brozovic with Davide Frattesi.

Their attack still has most of the players who helped them last season, in addition to Alexis Sanchez, who just joined on a short-term deal.

The Milanese have one of the best squads in the league, and it is really hard not to see them emerge as champions at the end of the season.

The Lautaro Martinez factor

One of Inter’s best pieces of business in this transfer window is keeping Lautaro Martinez, even if they have lost Lukaku.

The Argentinian and Lukaku formed a deadly partnership at the club when the Belgian was on their books, and they would have made life much easier for their teammates together.

However, when Lukaku was injured for a large part of last season, Martinez carried the team and continued to score goals relentlessly.

The Argentinian returned from the World Cup in superb form and began to chase Victor Osimhen for the top scorer gong in Serie A.

He eventually scored 21 goals in the league alone as Inter comfortably finished inside the top four.

Inter knows he is one player they can trust to deliver top performances for them in every game, and he has scored twice in his first league game of the 2023/2024 season.

If he continues this way, we can be sure that Inter will have no problems getting goals from Martinez and what other sign points to a possible league triumph than getting more than enough goals from your main man?

Napoli is not ready to retain the title

Napoli were surprising winners of the Italian top flight last season and played some superb football on their way to becoming the champions of Italy.

However, they have since lost some key elements of that success and might struggle to get near retaining the crown this season.

Their league-winning manager, Luciano Spalletti, left immediately after being confirmed as champions of Italy; he is now the national team's manager.

They managed to keep hold of Victor Osimhen after placing a huge pricetag on the Nigerian striker, but they have lost Kim Min-jae to Bayern Munich.

The Korean defender was the heart of their team at the back, and we all saw how they struggled when he was unavailable for some games.

His departure has left a huge void at the back of their side, and we expect them to struggle to cope.

This makes it one more reason why Inter has the complete team and should move on from being one of the best in the top four to winning the crown in this campaign.

Reaching the last Champions League final created a new belief

Inter has traditionally struggled in the Champions League since they won it in 2010, and that is why fans never expected so much from them in the last campaign.

They were supposed to be yet another also-ran side, especially as it was almost new territory for Inzaghi.

However, they defied the odds and reached the final of the competition, where they faced Manchester City.

The Italians lost that game by a lone goal, but we could all see how fearless they were in that final and the games before it.

It was one of the best performances we have seen from them in a long time, and reaching that stage of the competition means they have found a new level of confidence.

The Nerazzurri will take that experience with them to the new season, and it will serve to make them even stronger.

They will have a stronger resolve to achieve worthwhile success, which will be shown during their league games.

Winning the league is never an easy task, no matter who Inter will compete against, but their team is stable and has much of the ingredients other successful sides have to become champions of Italy again.
