Kobbie Mainoo and players England should take to Euro 2024

21/02/2024

Euro 2024 is only a few months away, and many countries are preparing to end it as European champions.

England is clearly one of the favourites to win the competition, as Gareth Southgate’s side has some of the best talents in European football.

The Premier League is arguably the biggest league in the world, and most English players play in their top flight.

However, in recent seasons, we have seen the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane leave and thrive away from home.

Mason Greenwood is also doing well at Getafe in Spain, while Ian Maatsen joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea last month and has been in fantastic form.

Under Southgate, England has been one of the best national teams in the world, and he is being backed to bring a trophy home soon.

The Three Lions reached the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup, the final of Euro 2020, and are expected to go one better and win Euro 2024.

Their current group is yet another golden generation, which they will not want to waste as they did with the Frank Lampard, Steven Gerard, Paul Scholes, and the Wayne Rooney generation.

Some players are nailed on to be on the England team for Euro 2024, and fans are already purchasing Euro 2024 tickets on Seatsnet to watch them in the summer.

However, in this article, we cover players who have impressed in the Premier League this term and deserve a chance to be on the England plane when it travels to Germany for the Euros.

Kobbie Mainoo, Manchester United

The first player on our list in Mainoo who has come from almost nowhere to become an important player for Manchester United.

The midfielder is just 18 and now enjoys a run of appearances in the United team and has deserved every minute he gets to play.

He scored a superb goal against Wolves not so long ago, but what catches the eye about Mainoo is how he plays.

The youngster is developing into a box-to-box player, and it is his calmness and reading of the game that makes him a player England might need in the Euros.

Pairing him alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice could be the key to the Three Lions returning from the competition as the champions of Europe.

Lewis Miley, Newcastle United

Persistent injuries to key players forced Newcastle United to turn to their academy, and they have discovered yet another gem in Miley.

The 17-year-old stepped into the Magpies’ team and has remained for much of this campaign, which means he is starting matches for one of England’s Champions League campaigners.

He made three appearances in the Champions League group stage and is in line to make over 20 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United this term. He deserves to grab the attention of Southgate.

Curtis Jones, Liverpool

Jones has been one of Liverpool’s most outstanding players this season as he now benches summer signing Ryan Gravenberch at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp found a way to fit the Englishman into his star-studded midfield, with Jones often playing alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo.

Their combination is a joy to watch, and his recent form means he deserves to get a chance to at least make England’s provincial list.

Ezri Konsa, Aston Villa

Konsa is having a brilliant season at Aston Villa, where he has settled in well under Unai Emery and could get a place in the England squad for the Euros.

The 26-year-old knows there are many defenders currently in the England national team, but he earned a first call-up to the senior squad last year.

This is a sign that Southgate and his coaches are following the defender who has been pivotal to Aston Villa’s fine run of form this term.

It would be difficult for Konsa to make the England squad for the competition, but if he keeps playing well and Villa qualifies for the Champions League, that could change.

Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa

For most Premier League fans, it is certain that Ollie Watkins will be on the plane when England travels for Euro 2024.

If he isn't on the squad, it would be difficult for Southgate to explain why he left a player who already has 13 goals and 10 assists from just 25 league games this term.

Watkins keeps improving and has thrived as the main striker for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, making him one of the best men to play a backup role for Harry Kane at Euro 2024.

However, Southgate must be convinced that the striker fits into how his team plays before Watkins can make the England squad for the Euros.

Lewis Dunk, Brighton

Dunk took time before he was noticed by the national team managers, but Southgate has called him recently, which showed the manager is tracking his progress.

The defender is one of the most experienced players in the Brighton dressing room and has been a leading contributor to their success under Roberto de Zerbi.

The Seagulls are still in the Europa League and could qualify for Europe again in the next campaign, which should make it easy for him to be in the mix to play at Euro 2024.

Anthony Gordon, Newcastle United

Gordon is another irresistible pick for Southgate, as he has been a superb signing for Newcastle United since he joined the Magpies.

Eddie Howe has been blessed to have Gordon in his squad because the attacker hardly gets injured, and he is ever reliable.

He has eight goals and five assists for Newcastle in 24 Premier League matches this term, so he is certainly a player who will be in the thinking of Southgate.

Levi Colwill, Chelsea

Chelsea rejected several bids from Brighton to sign Colwill permanently in the summer, and the centre-back is showing why that was a smart decision.

Colwill has been an ever-present in the Chelsea team this term because he is one of the finest young defenders in the Premier League.

The youngster was pivotal as Brighton finished inside the Europa League spots last term while on loan there. This is the reason the Seagulls were ready to break their transfer record to add him to their squad permanently.

England has so many top defenders, making it hard for Colwill to get a space in the squad for Euro 2024. However, if any of them is injured, we expect Southgate to draft Colwill into the squad ahead of other defenders.

Cole Palmer, Chelsea

Palmer pushed to leave Manchester City on loan last summer, but the defending champions opted to sell him to Chelsea instead, a decision they probably regret now.

Palmer has been one of the finest summer signings of the season and has been such a key player for Chelsea this term.

He is the main man in the Chelsea attack, which also has Raheem Sterling, and his numbers make him a player who will only keep getting better.

In 21 Premier League games this term, Palmer has ten goals and six assists, making him an indispensable player at Stamford Bridge.

Most people expect him to start playing regularly for England soon, but it would be interesting to see if he makes the squad for Euro 2024.
