The most impressive top scorers in the Premier League this season

07/05/2024

This has been an interesting season for goalscorers in the Premier League, with several names stepping up to challenge Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot.

The Norwegian had blown all the strikers away last season, which was his first in the Premier League with a terrific performance.

Haaland joined Manchester City and scored 36 league goals in 35 games for the Citizens, helping them retain their Premier League crown for a third consecutive time.

Haaland’s goals were the reason City overtook Arsenal and won the title again, and the Norwegian striker continues to lead the standings for leading scorers this term.

He missed many games through injury and has played only 28 league games this campaign, but Haaland remains the most reliable scorer in the Premier League, having bagged 25 strikes.

The ex-BVB man recently scored four times against Wolves and extended his lead at the top of the leading scorers chart.

This is the type of performance that makes it hard for another player to catch Haaland at the top of the scorers’ chart, but this season has seen several players step up to challenge him.

While he was away, it seemed Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins, and Dominic Solanke would challenge him for the top scorer award, but scoring four times against Wolves has again put Haaland in a class of his own.

This does not diminish the credit of those goalcorers who rose to the occasion and have been challenging him for the award for much of this season.

Is there an English goalscoring revolution?

England has typically struggled for goalscorers, and in every generation, one player stands out in that role.

After Wayne Rooney retired, Harry Kane has stepped up to be his country's main goalscorer and has been in fantastic form so far.

There is no other English striker that comes close to Harry Kane in terms of performance and we expect the star man whose influence has sold so many Bayern Munich tickets this season to lead the line for his country at the Euros.

The real headache lies in selecting a striker who will act as a backup to Kane at Euro 2024 because England has so many good goalscorers now.

Gareth Southgate has watched so many Premier League games and will be impressed by Palmer, Solanke, Watkins and Bowen, among others.

Not all of them are strikers, but they are scoring goals and have done so consistently for their present clubs this term.

The most impressive Premier League leading scorers this season

Several players have stepped up for their clubs in the Premier League this season and we cover some of the best in this article.

Cole Palmer, Chelsea

When Palmer moved from Manchester City to Chelsea at the beginning of this season, the attacker did so to get more game time.

Chelsea remained active in the market for young players to add to their squad and found Palmer to be an interesting signing.

However, they never expected his first campaign to be as brilliant as it has turned out, with the attacker consistently delivering top performances for the Blues.

Palmer has scored 21 league goals and provided 9 assists in his first 31 matches in the competition, which is a remarkable almost 1 G/A per game for the Chelsea forward.

His performance is driving Chelsea’s resurgence, even though their inconsistency makes it slow. However, if Palmer stays consistent in the next few seasons, Premier League tickets holders will see Chelsea win many trophies.

Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa

Watkins has been one of the best goal-scorers in the Premier League over the last few seasons and has been linked with a move to teams like Arsenal and Chelsea.

However, the former Brentford man seems to have hit a new height since the arrival of Unai Emery at Villa Park and continues to deliver terrific performances for the team.

With his current goal total, Watkins is making a case for himself to become England's backup striker at Euro 2024.

The Villa man has bagged 19 goals and 12 assists in his first 35 league games of the campaign and these goals are a reason Villa might play in the Champions League next season.

Dominic Solanke, Bournemouth

Solanke scored 29 league goals in the Championship in the 2021/2022 season and secured Bournemouth’s return to the Premier League.

The former Chelsea youngster struggled at Liverpool but found his feet at Bournemouth. However, scoring regularly in the Championship is different from the English top flight.

He scored just six times in 33 Premier League games last season, which showed he was struggling at the highest level.

However, in this campaign, Solanke has been superb, scoring 18 times in 36 league matches to lead Bournemouth to the verge of finishing this season inside the top half.

Solanke is another striker who is giving Gareth Southgate a selection headache ahead of Euro 2024 and could be on the plane to Germany in the summer.

Alexander Isak, Newcastle United

Newcastle triggered Isak’s release clause to sign him from Real Sociedad to show how convinced they were of the Swede.

Isak had been an important player for Real Sociedad, who were reluctant to negotiate his departure, forcing Newcastle to pay his release clause.

In his last season in Spain, the  Swede scored just six goals in 32 games, so he was not one of those players we all expected to shine in the Premier League.

This also set off alarm bells when Newcastle invested that huge sum to add him to their group, but Isak scored ten times in 22 league games last season.

He has been a better goalscorer in this campaign, finding the back of the net for 20 times in 27 league games and helping Newcastle to finish in a European place in back to back seasons despite suffering several injury crisis.

Jarrod Bowen, West Ham

Bowen has remained West Ham’s main goal threat since his move to the Premier League club.

Under David Moyes, the Englishman is thriving, and his 16 goals from 32 league games this season is a huge improvement on the 6 goals in 38 games he scored last term.

He is one of the biggest attacking threats in the West Ham team, but Bowen surprised most of us by scoring double figures in this campaign.

This has made him one of the players that Gareth Southgate will struggle to overlook when he picks his squad for Euro 2024.

Phil Foden, Manchester City

This has been Foden’s best goalscoring season at Manchester City as he has managed just nine games less than Haaland after 32 games, although he has played more games than the Norwegian.

He has become a reliable goal outlet for City and has scored some really important strikes for the Citizens as they look to win their fourth consecutive title.

With their remaining matches must-wins, Foden may need to step up even further and help the team score more goals in the next few weeks. Could he reach 20 league games for the season?

Kai Havertz, Arsenal

Havertz’s summer move to Arsenal was a surprising and unpopular transfer because he had not been in his best form in his final season at Chelsea.

Although he scored an important goal in the final of the Champions League in 2021, the German’s best goal return for the Blues was when he scored 8 goals in the 2021/2022 league season.

Arsenal fans did not know what to expect from the German, but most of them were not excited about his signing.

Mikel Arteta also appeared to struggle to find the best position for him when he first joined the club, but Havertz has thrived in a false nine role.

The German has now settled into that role and is thriving there. With 12 goals in the league so far, this is his highest-scoring season in England.

Conclusion

So many players have been in impressive form in front of the goal in the Premier League this season, with the likes of Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey, and Hwang Hee-Chan of Wolves also doing well.
