Players that Manchester United must offload this summer

30/01/2024

Last season was a very successful campaign for Manchester United, who started Erik Ten Hag’s spell on a bright note.

The Dutchman had taken over a sleeping giant in English football and was expected to make the Red Devils the top side in the Premier League again.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, United’s reputation has taken a serious beating, and they have continued to show poor form in the last few terms.

Ten Hag came to the club with a big reputation as one of the finest managers in European football following his success at Ajax.

The Dutch league is not one of the top five in Europe, but it still has considerable quality, and he is being backed to make things better at Old Trafford.

Since he arrived at the club, he has made some bold decision in terms of keeping and offloading players.

He did not care so much about Cristiano Ronaldo’s reputation and hurt the Portuguese star’s feelings, which made the attacker grant a shocking interview to Piers Morgan that effectively ended his spell at United.

Ten Hag also made some big calls like stripping Harry Maguire of the captaincy at the club as he struggled with his performance.

The Dutchman offloaded some players he felt were not fit for his style at the club and brought in a few of his choices, but he still does not have the right team to lead United back to the top of the league.

This transfer window and the next one offer him a chance to change that, and we expect some departures from Old Trafford.

Manchester United fans buy match tickets on Seatsnet, hoping to see their team win games always, so the club has to sign players who can achieve this.

Spending has hardly been a problem for the Glazer family, and United supporters appreciate this, but some players must leave for the team to move forward next season. Who are they?

Anthony Martial

Martial joined United for a huge fee, like most signings under the Glazer family, but the Frenchman will leave as a flop.

In the last few terms, he has been plagued by injuries, but even when he is not injured, Martial’s highest-scoring Premier League season was the 17 league goals he scored in the 2019/2020 term.

He has often failed to help the team achieve good results, and it is unthinkable that he will get a new contract.

His current deal runs out at the end of the term, and he has just suffered a new injury that will keep him out for around two months.

He moved to Old Trafford as one of the best youngsters in the world, but he has failed to meet expectations and will hardly find another top club to take a chance on him now.

Facundo Pellistri

Pellistri has only made a handful of Premier League appearances for United since he joined the club in 2020.

It was surprising that United did not allow the Uruguayan to leave on loan in the summer, and we expected to see much of him this term.

However, he has again failed to command a regular starting place, occasionally coming in as a substitute under Ten Hag.

Because he is still just 22, it is tempting to think that he will get better and probably become a regular soon.

However, the reality is that Pellistri is not good enough for a top club like United. If the Red Devils are serious about an improvement in their performance next term, he has to leave.

If the club feels he has huge potential for the future, then he should be allowed to leave on loan because he must develop more to be an important player for a big club.

Antony

Ten Hag has gotten a lot of transfers right, but he failed miserably on the purchase of Antony from his former club, Ajax.

The Brazilian signed as one of the most exciting wingers in Europe, but he spends too much time showboating and has nothing to show for it.

He had to wait until the FA Cup game against Newport to score and provide his first assist of the 2023/2024 season.

This is ridiculously poor for a player United signed for £82 million, and they have to cut their losses on the Brazilian.

The problem with spending such a huge fee on a player is that when they fail to make their mark, you will lose money on their departure.

However, the longer Antony stays at Old Trafford, the worse he gets, and United must cut their losses now and let him leave for a better right winger to join them.

Sofyan Amrabat

Amrabat was a part of the Morocco team that reached the semi-final of the World Cup last year and was followed by the top clubs in Europe.

It was a surprise that he did not change clubs last January, but United finally added him to their squad in the summer.

The midfielder came to the club with a big reputation, considering his role for his country at the last World Cup and reaching the final of the Europa Conference League with Fiorentina.

However, Amrabat has hardly shown enough to suggest he is an upgrade to the options he met at the club.

He is an average midfielder, and the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo means United do not need to make his loan move permanent.

Scott McTominay has also looked revived, and they can trust him to do well in games. Amrabat should be allowed to return to Fiorentina.

Mason Mount

As controversial as this sounds, Mason Mount seems to have had his best days on the pitch behind him.

Ten Hag showed love for English talent when he convinced Mount to move to Old Trafford in the summer.

The midfielder was failing at Chelsea, but most of us thought it was because of the constant managerial change at the London club.

Mount was terrible in pre-season and has not been better in this campaign, although injury has slowed him down.

United signed the midfielder hoping to get the 2021/2022 version, but with every passing week, it seems that was a one-off campaign, and they will be smart to cash in on him if a good offer comes in the summer.

Raphael Varane

Raphael Varane was one of the players United signed to make their team stronger and more valuable on and off the pitch.

The French centre-back had won all the trophies in club football at Real Madrid, yet United thought it was wise to bring him to the club.

He does not have as much hunger as a younger defender, yet he is one of the highest earners at Old Trafford.

On an individual level, Varane has been a stable signing, however, the defender has not improved United much, and this summer is the time to allow him to leave the club.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho’s future at United remains undecided, but the attacker will bet on himself to outlast Ten Hag at the club.

After falling out with the manager, he has been sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund, where he will spend the rest of this season.

Sancho is a very talented boy and is showing his class back in Dortmund, so his future seems better away from United.

However, the club will need a huge fee to let him go, and he is now one of the top earners in European football, so his next club must be one that can afford his United wages.

Otherwise, the Red Devils will have to subsidize it until his deal with them expires.
