Will Everton struggle to stay in the Premier League again?

03/08/2024

Everton has survived relegation from the Premier League in the last three seasons and have been struggling since Carlo Ancelotti left as their manager.

The Toffees have always been the second-best team in Merseyside after Liverpool, but they were a decent outfit that did not struggle to finish inside the top half of the Premier League table.

Everton even challenged for a place in the top four under managers like David Moyes and Ronald Koeman, but things have been differently poor for them in recent seasons.

Majority owner Farhad Moshiri bought Everton with hopes of turning it into a successful team like Manchester City but has suffered so many setbacks.

He does not have the deep pockets of the owners of City who have bought some of the best players in the world and consistently found success under Pep Guardiola.

We certainly did not think Everton will become as successful as City has been, however, we also did not expect them to be in so much trouble in recent campaigns.

The Toffees are traditionally one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers, so we expect to see them in the competition every season, even if they will not win it.

However, in the last three campaigns, they have survived relegation by fighting for their lives at the end of the term, although things were much better in the last campaign.

Sean Dyche’s side managed to finish in the 15th position and did not have to worry about their safety during the final match of the campaign.

Everton tickets buyers are not preparing for another season of ups and downs, during which their team will struggle to win games.

They want to see their club do much better and challenge for a place in European football or at least finish in the top half of the table, and that could happen.

Everton’s summer businesses so far

Despite having a widely publicised financial problem, Everton has made a fantastic start to the summer transfer window.

The Toffees have shrugged off going through some failed attempts to change ownership to spend money on some key players while keeping their main men.

Their most sought after player in this transfer window is defender Jarrad Branthwaite who is being tracked by the likes of Manchester United looking to add him to their squad.

The defender was in terrific form for them last season, and it is a matter of time before he changes clubs, but for now, it makes sense that Everton has kept him.

The Toffees have, however, released the likes of Dele Alli, Andre Gomes, Andy Lonergan, and several other youngsters.

Sean Dyche is trying to enter the new season with a neat and productive club and has been given as much support as possible to sign new players.

Everton has added the likes of Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa, Iliman Ndiaye from Olympique Marseille and Jake O'Brien from Olympique Lyon.

They have also loaned in Jack Harrison from Leeds United and Jesper Lindstrøm from Napoli to further strengthen their ranks.

We did not expect them to make one of the top signings in the Premier League this summer, but losing Amadou Onana to Aston Villa and Ben Godfrey to Atalanta could be costly.

Two of them did well for the Toffees last season and have been a part of the team that has kept them in the Premier League over the last few seasons.

Is Sean Dyche still the man for the job?

Since Sean Dyche arrived on the scene as the manager of Everton at the start of last year, he has been seen as a hero by Everton supporters.

The former long-time Burnley boss suffered relegation with his former club, but he has attained legendary status at Everton for saving them from the drop in 2022/2023.

In the 2023/2024 term, his team still had some scares, but they worked hard and were saved from relegation again.

It is a non-starter to talk about replacing Dyche as the Everton manager, and the gaffer has earned the right to stay, but if the Toffees want to stop struggling for relegation, they have to consider his future.

For now, the team needs a manager to keep it in the Premier League, and that leaves Dyche as a good option. However, if they want to start challenging for a European spot, they will have to think about a new coach.

How many starting games of the season can Everton win?

Everton will face Brighton in their first Premier League game of the season, and that will be a tricky start.

However, the Seagulls have just changed their managers, and we can consider Fabian Hürzeler to be too inexperienced to start well.

This means Dyche could mastermind a start to the season with a win against the South Coast club because he is far more experienced than the opposite number, but it is not a guarantee.

They will then visit Tottenham in their next Premier League game in August and this is where it gets tricky for them.

Spurs made an amazing start to the Premier League last term, and Ange Postecoglou’s side will be looking to win this game at all costs; Everton will be lucky to return home with a point.

The Toffees will then return home for their final game in August when they host Bournemouth, which is another tricky Fixture.

The Cherries have been a fantastic team in the Premier League since Andoni Iraola became their manager, and they could get a win at Goodison Park in this game.

Everton’s three games in August are all tough matches, but it is only the first fixture against Brighton they can win. If they fail to do so, they will likely make a poor start to another season.

A surprise challenge for a European place

Based on their performances in the last few seasons, we mostly expect Everton to struggle in this campaign, but the Toffees could also do well.

They have some fine players, and Dyche helped Burnley qualify for Europe in one of his seasons as their manager.

If everything goes to plan and Everton consistently wins games as they did in some weeks during the last campaign, they might end this season in one of the European spots.

Conclusion

Everton has struggled in the last few seasons, but the Toffees could still change all that in this campaign if their new signings meet expectations and their important players improve.

However, achieving this will not be easy for them, and it will be interesting to see how they perform.
