What we expect from Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich this season

04/08/2023

Thomas Tuchel is the latest manager of Bayern Munich, and the ex-Chelsea gaffer inherits one of the most talented teams in the world.

Bayern has dominated the Bundesliga in the last decade and has won the last ten consecutive league crowns while also winning the 2013 and 2020 Champions League.

They have made themselves the team to fear in the German top flight, and every club knows how difficult it is to overcome them in any game.

Managing Bayern is one of the easiest jobs in the entire world, which is one reason why any manager who does not find success there gets fired almost instantly.

The Bavarians are ruthless when it comes to offloading players and managers, and we can see that playing out in the last campaign.

Sadio Mane joined them from Liverpool as one of the most decorated players in the world, and he had just reached the final of the Champions League with the Reds as well.

However, he never performed as well as they would have wanted, and the Senegal star was ousted in this transfer window.

He now plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, which is a clear sign that he is leaving the game, even though one of his new teammates is Cristiano Ronaldo.

Julian Nagelsmann is one of the most highly-rated managers in the world and was in demand when Bayern made him their manager by snapping him up from RB Leipzig.

He started his spell well and won the Bundesliga in his first season on the bench while snapping up two cup titles.

However, last season, things began to unravel, and it seemed he had lost the dressing room at the Allianz Stadium.

Bayern had no room for complacency, as is the case always, and ruthlessly sacked him while he was still on holiday.

Tuchel was brought in to save their season, even though the Bavarians still had the chance to win three trophies.

The ex-Chelsea boss was lucky to end the term as a league champion after Borussia Dortmund dramatically fell short on the final day of the season.

BVB just needed to win at home, but they drew their game, and Bayern were shocked to be announced as champions after they did their part.

Last season is now in the history books, and it is Tuchel’s first season on the bench of the most successful club in Germany.

The gaffer knows he has to deliver, and it is almost certain that he will be sacked if they start the campaign poorly.

If that happens, even he would understand because any manager who has the luxury of talents that he has at the Allianz Arena will do all he can to ensure Bayern Munich tickets sell.

Tuchel has coached some of Europe’s most successful clubs, having had spells at Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

The highlight of his managerial career came when he won the Champions League in 2021, and he could better that achievement if he gets this Bayern team to play at their best.

At the end of the next campaign, he is expected to have achieved so much, and we have selected three things we expect from him.

Win the Champions League

Bayern Munich were in superb form in the 2019/2020 season and won the Champions League by beating a Kylian Mbappe-led PSG team.

Interestingly, Tuchel was the manager of the Parisians at the time, which shows he is a manager that can win big prizes.

The Champions League campaign of that season was heavily disrupted by the covid-19 outbreak earlier.

Nevertheless, both finalists deserve to reach that stage, and Bayern won one of the most exciting finals in recent times after some dogged defending.

Tuchel would go on to achieve European success at Chelsea the following season. He had replaced Frank Lampard halfway through the campaign, with Chelsea having a bad season.

However, he still won the European Cup by beating Manchester City in the final, thanks to an important goal from Kai Havertz.

At Bayern, Tuchel should win another Champions League crown, and we expect that in the next campaign.

He has had a proper pre-season with the Bavarians, and his players should be prepared to challenge for the different competitions when the term begins.

One problem Bayern had last season was failing to replace Robert Lewandowski, which they can do this summer with Harry Kane.

If that transfer pulls through, we expect them to become one of the teams to fear in Europe.

Kane is a striker that guarantees goals even when he does not get so much supply. Bayern has an abundance of attacking talents, so the Englishman will get more than enough chances to find the back of the net during the campaign if he joins them.

Dominate the Bundesliga.

As we covered earlier, Bayern were lucky to win the Bundesliga last season, and they did so on goal difference after BVB shockingly could not win in front of their fans on the final day of the season.

That is one of the few times in the last decade that the Bundesliga has been a two-horse race and we know it was because of the instability Bayern suffered.

However, the next campaign has to be different, and Tuchel will be in the spotlight from the start of it.

His team must become the Bayern we all know and dominate the domestic competitions from the beginning until the end.

The Bavarians have the best players in Germany, so it would be hard to justify why the team will not be the dominant side in the Bundesliga.

Tuchel has a point to prove after his Chelsea spell ended disastrously. He would not get the chance to recover from a bad start at Bayern as well, so his team must hit the ground running immediately after the campaign begins and open a large point gap by the 20th game of the season.

If this happens, they will almost certainly have momentum in other competitions as well and probably end the term by winning the league, cup and Champions League.

Get Harry Kane to score 35+ goals

Kane seems closer than ever to a move to Bayern Munich as he continues to ignore Tottenham’s offer to sign a new deal.

Bayern had also wanted Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlahovic at the start of the transfer window but have turned all their attention towards a move for Kane.

This means they are very likely to seal the deal for the English striker, and Tuchel would be able to work with one of the best attackers in the world.

Kane scored 30 league goals for Tottenham in the last campaign and was only beaten to the top scorer award by Erling Haaland, who was frightening.

If the Englishman can score that many goals in the Premier League, which is the toughest competition in the world, and for one of the poorest teams in the division last season, then he can do more in Germany.

Should he secure the move to Bavaria, we expect him to score as many as Robert Lewandowski scored in the Bundesliga.

His numbers in the Champions League should also improve because he has so many talents around him, supplying him with the balls to find the back of the net.

Tuchel will be managing one of the best clubs in Europe, and he knows he has so much talent at his disposal, so success is a must, but we believe he has what it takes to get the job done.
