Who will win the Carabao Cup in 2024?

20/12/2023

We have reached the business end of the Carabao Cup and the exit of Manchester United means there will be a new winner of the competition this season.

The Carabao Cup is one of two domestic cup competitions for English clubs, and every team in the country wants to get their hands on it.

Last season, Manchester United defeated Newcastle United to be crowned champions.

It was a remarkable day for the Red Devils as they showed good progress under Erik Ten Hag, who had been their manager for less than a year.

This year, the Red Devils did not reach the quarterfinal of the competition, which means we will have a new winner at the end of this term’s edition.

Several clubs have reached the final eight and it is being played in the midweek of the 19th and 20th of December.

Everton, Liverpool, West Ham, Fulham, Port Vale, Middlesbrough, Chelsea and Newcastle United have all reached the last eight.

Newcastle would be eager to be the champions after reaching the final of the competition last season, but things don’t work that way in football.

The Magpies were eliminated by Chelsea in the quarterfinal of the competition and will have to try again next season

They were a team to watch but could not defeat the Blues to reach the semi-final of the competition, but who are the favourites to win the competition?

Fans who buy Carabao Cup tickets know they are in for a good time and will struggle to know which team will be the champion after the final.

We have rated the chance of the top clubs left in the competition winning it.

Fulham

Marco Silva is doing an amazing job at Fulham and has just led them to their first semi-final in the Carabao Cup in their history.

The Cottagers defeated Everton in the quarterfinals on penalties to reach the last four and they are a team to watch.

Because this is their first semi-final, it would be hard for anyone to expect them to do exploit, but they eliminated an in-form Everton team, and that should worry the other clubs left in the competition.

The Carabao Cup has been a place for upsets in English football and because they have reached the semi-final, you must give them credit for having a good time in the competition so far, but they will not win it.

Probability of winning the Carabao Cup: 5/10

Liverpool

Liverpool won the Carabao Cup in 2022, even though Jurgen Klopp usually fields his weakened team in the competition.

The Reds have been very successful in the competition and the German will be eager to win it this term.

This is because it could be the only domestic trophy that they will win this season, as the league is very competitive and they could be eliminated in their first game in the FA Cup after being paired with Arsenal.

Liverpool has won nine league cups already, and the Reds have a good pedigree in that competition as one of the top teams in England.

Klopp’s team is fighting for the Premier League title this term, but it is difficult to see them win as they play in the Europa League on Thursdays.

This makes it hard for them to earn victories at the weekend when they are usually expected to play again on Sundays.

However, the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League are three competitions that they have a very good chance of winning.

The Reds will face West Ham in their quarterfinal game and it will be interesting to see if they can win that fixture.

David Moyes’ men have been terrific in it and eliminated Arsenal with a brilliant performance in the last round.

They will fancy their chance of winning at Anfield, but that will be much easier said than done for the London club.

We see Liverpool making progress into the semi-final and perhaps winning the competition as one of the experienced clubs left in it.

Probability of winning the Carabao Cup: 8/10

West Ham

West Ham won the Europa Conference League last season, which is a very important achievement for David Moyes’ men because it has shown them how to be champions.

As they compete in the Carabao Cup, they will be full of confidence that they can win the competition as well.

Their performance against Arsenal in the last round was remarkable as they swept Mikel Arteta’s Premier League table toppers aside and reached the quarterfinals.

Their reward for that is a clash against Liverpool and it does not come easy at all.

Klopp’s men know they may not win the Premier League and have to be very serious with the cups.

Because of that, we expect the game to be tough for the Reds, but can West Ham win the Carabao Cup?

Their win against Arsenal in the last round has exposed them as one of the teams to fear, and it will make Liverpool not underestimate them.

However, if they can defeat the Reds, who are one of the favourites to win the competition, we expect them to reach the final and probably win it, depending on who they meet in the semi-final.

Probability of winning the Carabao Cup: 7/10

Chelsea

Chelsea eliminated Newcastle United in the quarterfinal stage of the Carabao Cup to book their place in the semi-final and it seems Mauricio Pochettino could end his first season in West London with a trophy.

The Blues have been inconsistent in the Premier League and it does not seem like they will finish the season inside the top four.

However, they have sustained their run in the Carabao Cup and are now in the semi-final, which is great.

Chelsea has historically won five Carabao Cups, three of which were won under Roman Abramovich.

The club’s current owners have invested heavily in the playing squad and trusted Poch to coach their team to success.

Winning the Carabao Cup this year will be great for their team because they need a trophy to show for all the money they have invested in the squad.

Poch also needs a trophy in England to add to his reputation, having struggled to win any when he coached Tottenham.

The Blues are now one of the favourites to win the competition, having done well in the game against Newcastle, and they could face Liverpool in the final if both teams do not meet in the semi-final.

Probability of winning the Carabao Cup: 7/10

Middlesbrough have also reached the semi-final of the competition, but we do not expect them to make much progress and they could be eliminated in the semi-final, whoever they face.

The Carabao Cup remains one of the top club competitions in England and these clubs all have a chance of winning it when the campaign ends.

But it remains unpredictable and we expect to see some very good matches in the remaining fixtures before the final.
