Euro 2024 Favourites profile: France

06/09/2023

France remains one of the powerhouses of world football and they won the World Cup as recently as 2018 while also clinching the Nations League trophy in 2021.

Les Bleus remains one side that will certainly be at Euro 2024 next year and has the squad to win that competition.

Apart from winning the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League trophy, France was a finalist at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and boasts some of the best players in the world.

Winning the World Cup in 2018 would not have been possible without a teenage Kylian Mbappe, who burst onto the scene with his electric performance in that competition.

The striker is now the captain of his country and he is just 24. He is also very close to being the all-time record scorer for his country, as he has already bagged 40.

Mbappe is just one of several players in the French team that makes them easy favourites to win the competition in Germany next year.

Didier Deschamps was a world champion for France as a player in 1998 and was in the last France team to win the Euros in 2000.

He also managed them to the final of Euro 2016, where they lost to Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.

France has remained one of the ever-improving sides in the world and as older players leave the fray, it is easy for them to get new talents in who will make French fans buy UEFA Euro 2024 tickets.

In the last World Cup, Marcus Thuram, Randal Kolo Muani, William Saliba, Ibrahima Konate, and Dayot Upamecano, among others, showed France will not run out of talent soon.

The team still has Olivier Giroud, who is ever-green and continues to score every week for AC Milan at 36.

He should be out of the picture by now, but France's record scorer keeps making a case for himself to play for his beloved nation.

He is one player you can bank on to find the back of the next in any game and could be on the plane for the next Euros.

In midfield, they have the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni and Edouardo Camavinga, who play for the almighty Real Madrid.

These players are individuals who will be relevant to their clubs and national teams several years from now because they are very young and are just at the start of their careers.

France will be at the Euros next year and we expect them to be among the countries that could win the competition. Who are the players that will make that happen?

Goalkeepers

Hugo Lloris announced his retirement from international football this summer, which is not a decision that should worry France.

He has been at the post for around a decade and that is not because France does not have other good goalkeepers.

Lloris has proven irreplaceable for club and country, but Les Bleus have entered a new era and we now expect to see someone new in goal for the Euros.

Deschamps may have a hard time determining his next first-choice goalkeeper because the French are blessed with some of the finest goalies in the world.

AC Milan's Mike Maignan seems to be the obvious choice to become the next first choice, but he knows there is serious competition for that spot.

The likes of Brice Samba of Lens, Alphonse Areola of West Ham, Alban Lafont of Nantes and Steve Mandanda are all looking to get chances in the team now as well.

Whoever is chosen to play in goal as the first choice at the Euros would be one of the best goalies around and will do their best to help France win the competition.

Defence

At the World Cup, France had one of the best defences, which contributed to them reaching the competition's final.

Liverpool's Konate reached the final of the Champions League with his club before the World Cup and was superb in that game against Real Madrid.

He took the form to the World Cup, where he also reached the final, partnering Raphael Varane and it was a superb partnership.

Varane has retired from international football and Konate will get a new partner, but defence is not a position that Les Bleus has a problem.

In all of Europe's top five leagues, France has some of the best defenders and these players are regulars for their respective clubs.

Their manager will have the luxury of picking from the likes of Theo Hernandez of AC Milan, Lucas Hernandez of PSG, Benjamin Pavard of Inter Milan, Upamecano of Bayern, Joules Kounde of Barcelona, Saliba at Arsenal, as Axel Disasi of Chelsea, among others.

The French national team might be the country with the best international defenders in the world at the moment and we expect this to make it easy for them to win as many matches as possible at the Euros.

Midfield

With the likes of N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba no longer readily available for selection, France underwent a midfield revolution at the last World Cup.

We saw several new players in the squad who were expected to struggle at the competition because of this sudden and unexpected personnel change.

However, Les Bleus adapted well and reached the final, which they could have won if the football gods did not favour Lionel Messi and Argentina.

France now has new midfield heroes, and most of these players are young, energetic, and enterprising.

Les Bleus can bank on the likes of Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, who both play for Real Madrid in the Spanish top flight.

They can also bank on the likes of Adrien Rabiot, who is now arguably the most senior midfielder in the squad.

Boubacar Camara of Aston Villa, Youssouf Fofana of Lens, Matteo Guendouzi of Lazio and Kephrem Thuram of Nice are some of the newest players invited by their national team.

Pogba is still considered available to the managers, but he has been battling niggling injuries since he moved to Juventus last season.

If the 2018 World Cup winner is fit and available for Euro 2024, then they will have one of the most influential players in the world leading their midfield, which instantly improves it.

Attack

Attack is another position that France is blessed just like in their defence, with one man able to do all the work and score all the goals on his day.

Kylian Mbappe is now one of the best players in the world and the striker is the captain of his country at 24.

Mbappe has been one of the best strikers on the global stage since he burst onto the scene in 2017 and continues to go strong.

He bagged a hat trick at the final of the last World Cup, even though France lost to Argentina and this shows how lethal he can be on his day.

The attacker is not the only option France has up front, with his PSG teammates Ousmane Dembele and Randal Kolo Muani also available.

Dembele was a part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2018 and Muani missed one of the biggest chances in the 2022 final against Argentina.

France can trust these players to deliver glory at Euro 2024 and we expect them to be supported by the likes of Olivier Giroud, Christopher Nkunku, Moussa Diaby, Marcus Thuram, Antione Griezmann, and Kingsley Coman, among others.

Coach

Didier Deschamps is one of the best coaches we have ever seen in international football after his heroics for the France national team since he was made manager.

He reached the final of Euro 2016 before coaching the team to victory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Deschamps has had a very good managerial career and can even retire after his stint with the national team, as he would be a fulfilled man.

Having also won league titles with Monaco, Juventus and Olympique Marseille, he is one manager we can trust to deliver the Euro 2024 trophy to his employers.
