What records can Kylian Mbappe break at Real Madrid?

10/06/2024

After several years of speculation and drama, Kylian Mbappe has finally signed for Real Madrid.

Mbappe and Real Madrid look like they have been destined for each other from inception, with the player long dreaming of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

When he was a teenager, he was famously given a tour of the club's facility and training ground and had several pictures of Real Madrid icons in his room.

The 25-year-old also named Cristiano Ronaldo as his football idol growing up and has followed in the footsteps of the Portuguese icon in playing for the all-white Los Blancos.

After years of delay, the Frenchman’s dream has become a reality. He was unveiled by Real Madrid two days after they lifted their 15th Champions League crown.

Madridistas cannot wait to see Mbappe in live action for their club, given that he is currently one of the best players in the world.

His arrival has undoubtedly elevated the club's status and the value of Real Madrid tickets

But we have at least two months left before Mbappe makes his first competitive debut for the club.

This could come in the UEFA Super Cup between Real Madrid and Europa League winners Atalanta at Warsaw's National Stadium in Poland on August 14th.

For now, he will be hoping to lead France to the European Championship title, with his Les Blues side one of the favourites to win the Euro 2024 title.

Should he lead France to the European title, he will become one of the country's most successful players. Despite being relatively young, he has already played in two World Cup finals (winning one).

Not only is he winning these trophies, but Mbappe has repeatedly been the star of the show.

Recording another successful tournament with France will undoubtedly give him a huge boost when he returns to Madrid.

Having already conquered Ligue 1, the 2018 World Cup winner will be hoping to go down as one of the world's best players and follow in the footsteps of other top players who have played for Los Blancos by having a successful career in Spain.

But before Mbappe kicks a ball for Real Madrid, what heights can he reach at the Santiago Bernabeu?

The 25-year-old broke several records for PSG and Ligue 1, and his departure could affect PSG negatively as it could open the door for other teams to overtake the Parisians.

Having moved to Spain, what La Liga records can he break during his time in La Liga?

In this article, we consider some of the records Mbappe should target to break at Real Madrid and establish him as one of the greatest players of this generation.

Most Ballon d'Or trophies

Mbappe may aim to break the first record at Santiago Bernabeu by becoming the Real Madrid player with the most Ballon d'Or trophies in the club's history.

The 25-year-old has been on the periphery of the Ballon d'Or podium for the last six years but has never finished number one.

Mbappe became the youngest-ever Ballon d'Or nominee in 2017 before announcing himself on the world stage at the World Cup in Russia.

He led his nation to the World Cup title that year but was only awarded the Kopa Trophy for his efforts in Russia.

However, the consensus since then has been that Mbappe will win multiple Ballon d'Or trophies in his career.

He has yet to win one, though, and his best Ballon d'Or performance came in 2023 when he finished third behind Lionel Messi and Manchester City goal-machine Erling Haaland. But playing in Spain could help him win many Ballon d'Or trophies.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the player with the most Ballon d'Or titles in Madrid history—five titles. The Portuguese won four of those trophies in Spain, having won one at Manchester United.

Mbappe can follow in his footsteps and win even more Ballon d'Or trophies, especially as he is still young and has no Lionel Messi to compete with as Ronaldo did.

Most Club goals

Mbappe can also beat Ronaldo to become the player with the most goals in Real Madrid’s history.

The Frenchman is already PSG’s top scorer, with 256 goals in just 308 appearances. So, he will be targeting beating Ronaldo’s record of 450 competitive goals in 438 appearances.

Mbappe has the time to break the record, and his career average of one goal per club game shows he has the tools to go better than Ronaldo.

But he needs to keep himself fit and sharp to make as many appearances as possible in the Spanish capital.

Fastest to score 50/100/150/200 Liga goals

Mbappe was the fastest player to reach several goalscoring milestones in the Champions League and Champions League until a certain prolific Norwegian burst onto the scene.

However, the Frenchman can target being the fastest player to reach several goalscoring milestones in La Liga, beginning with breaking Isidro Lángara’s record of 50 goals in 37 La Liga games.

Most Club trophies

Mbappe can also aim to beat Luka Modric, who is the player with the most trophies at Real Madrid.

The Madrid man has already won 17 trophies, so he is no stranger to packing trophies.

Modric currently leads the table with 26 trophies. The Croatian has one more season to go and could add a few more trophies with Mbappe's help.

However, the Frenchman can also aim to eclipse that trophy record, beginning with the UEFA Super Cup in August.

Most appearances as a foreign player in all competitions

This may be a hard nut to crack, but should Mbappe remain at the top of his game and stay at the Bernabeu for the next eleven years, he has the opportunity to beat Karim Benzema’s record of being the foreign player with the most appearances for Madrid in all competitions (648).

Most Assist in Real Madrid

Another record Mbappe can edge Bsenzema on is the record for the most assists for Madrid.

Mbappe's former national team teammate, Benzema, has 165 assists for Madrid, setting him at the top of the assists charts for the club.

Mbappe has the ability to break Benzema's record, given he has assisted 154 goals in 442 competitive games.

For context, Benzema made 648 appearances for Madrid, so Mbappe's average of 0.34 assists per game is better than Benzema's average of 0.25 assists per game.

Most Champions League Goals in Real Madrid/history

Despite being relatively young, Mbappe is already one of Champions League’s most prolific forwards.

The Frenchman has 48 goals in the UCL, meaning that he has more European Cup goals than top players like Neymar, Eusebio, Mo Salah, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto, Alessandro Del Piero, Romario, Sergio Aguero, Ferenc Puskas, Gerd Muller, Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez, and David Trezeguet.

To put into context, only nine players in Champions League and European Cup history have scored more goals in the competition than Mbappe.

Of those, only Robert Lewandowski, Alfredo di Stefano, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo have a better goals-per-game ratio than Mbappe’s 0.68.

He is the youngest Champions League goalscorer for two clubs, is first in PSG UCL's top scorers list, and is joint-third in Monaco's top scorers list in the UCL.

For now, Cristiano Ronaldo (107) has scored the most goals for Real Madrid in European competitions. With Madrid very dominant in the competition, Mbappe has the foundation to break Ronaldo's record and also become the tournament’s most prolific marksman.

Most El Clasico Goals

Lionel Messi currently holds the record for most goals in the El Clasico, with his 26 goals against Real Madrid, the most in the fixture.

But Mbappe can beat that record. He already has six goals against Barca in just four games and is one of only three players to score a Champions League hat trick against the Catalan club.

He is also the first to score four goals against Real Madrid’s fierce rivals in a single Champions League campaign, so outscoring everyone in the El Clasico should be his next target.

Most La Liga hattricks

Kylian Mbappe has scored 19 career hat tricks across seven different competitions.

However, he has some way to go to beat Lionel Messi’s 36 La Liga hat tricks, which is the most in the league. Yet, he has time on his side and can at least attempt to break Messi's record.

Most La Liga goals in a season

Lionel Messi holds the record for most La Liga goals in a season, with the 50 league goals he scored in the 2011/12 season still being the benchmark.

Having netted an average of 27.8 goals in his last four Ligue 1 seasons, he has a long way to go in catching Messi's record of 50 goals per season.

However, he will be motivated by Ronaldo, who took his goalscoring exploits to another level in Madrid despite not hitting Mbappe’s goalscoring numbers in his former club.

Most Pichichi awards (La Liga top goalscorer)

Mbappe can also target breaking Messi’s record for the most La Liga top scorer award (8).

The Frenchman has a history of outscoring others in the league. He has been Ligue 1’s top scorer in a record six straight seasons, a record for the competition. He is also the first player to finish as a top scorer and assist provider in the same Ligue 1 season (2021/22), so he can target repeating the feat in La Liga.

Most La Liga Best Player awards

Messi also leads in this department, with his six La Liga Best Player awards, the most in the league’s history.

Mbappe, who is the only player to win the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award in five consecutive seasons and the first player to win it in four straight seasons, can target Messi's record in La Liga.
