Can Liverpool win the quadruple this season?

28/02/2024

Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he would leave Liverpool at the end of this season has not had a negative impact on the Reds, instead, it could help them win the quadruple finally.

The German’s team could have achieved this in 2022 when they won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup before reaching the final of the Champions League and taking the Premier League title race to the last day of the season.

Liverpool was on course to win the other two competitions, but it never happened as an individually brilliant performance from Ilkay Gundogan helped City to win the Premier League on the last day of the season, and Real Madrid won the Champions League.

Liverpool struggled the following season, perhaps because of the heartbreak they had suffered in the previous term.

However, this season, Jurgen Klopp’s men are back as one of the top competitors in the Premier League and Europe.

They are not playing in the Champions League, but that could be a good thing because the Europa League is one of only two club competitions Klopp is yet to win.

His side remains one of the favourites to win the Europa League this term, and they continue to do well in the FA Cup and are at the top of the Premier League table.

This season is shaping to be a dream campaign for Liverpool tickets holders, and we wonder: Can they win the quadruple?

Carabao Cup success (with kids)

The first of four trophies Liverpool can win this season is the Carabao Cup, and they have added that gong to their cabinet in spectacular fashion.

Like most teams, Liverpool used several youth team players from the earlier rounds of the competition, yet they made good progress until they reached the final.

The Reds were without several key players because of injury as they faced a freshly built £1 billion Chelsea squad with most of its players available to play.

Klopp’s bench for the final was filled with teenagers as the likes of Bobby Clark (19), Jayden Danns (18), James McConnell (19), and Jarell Quansah (21) came on as substitutes for them.

Despite this limitation, Liverpool won the game and the cup in extra time, shocking Chelsea and embarrassing Mauricio Pochettino.

The spirit that makes Liverpool “mentality monsters” seems to have reached down from the senior team into the club’s academy, making it difficult to defeat any player they field.

FA Cup

Liverpool remains in the FA Cup and will face Southampton in the fifth round of the competition at home next.

The Reds have still not recovered the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Trent Alexander Arnold, among other important players who missed the Carabao Cup final through injury.

But we still expect Liverpool to eliminate the Championship side and move to the next round of the competition.

At the start of 2024, Liverpool faced Arsenal in their first FA Cup game, and most people expected the Gunners to win at home.

Mikel Arteta’s side had so many chances to win the game, but they never took them, and Liverpool returned from London with a 2-0 win in hand a qualification for the next round of the FA Cup.

They now have even more confidence that the FA Cup could be theirs, and facing Southampton at home makes it even harder for Liverpool not to continue their march towards winning the FA Cup.

They won it in 2022, and the players seem to have decided they will give Jurgen Klopp the outstanding sending-off he deserves at the end of this term.

Europa League

Liverpool is not playing in the Champions League this season because of their poor form in the last campaign, which made them finish fifth on the Premier League table behind Newcastle United.

It was a sad end to the last campaign, which had promised little because of the several injury problems the Reds had suffered, especially in midfield.

Liverpool entered the Europa League for the first time since 2016 when they reached the final of the competition.

That was Jurgen Klopp’s first season as their manager, and the German reached the Europa League and Carabao Cup final.

He won neither, he now has a chance to add the Europa League medal to his collection, and Liverpool could end this season with that competition in the bag.

The Reds topped their group with ease and would face Sparta Prague in the round-of-16 of the competition.

Sparta cannot be underestimated because they reached this stage of the competition by eliminating Champions League campaigners Galatasaray.

The Turkish side is a superb team filled with world-class talents, yet Sparta eliminated them with a 6-4 aggregate score.

It will not be an easy game for Liverpool, but the Czech Republic team will also know they are facing one of the world’s biggest clubs and will struggle to repeat their heroics against Galatasaray.

There are other tougher teams left in the Europa League, and Liverpool may not get an easier draw in the next round, but we still expect the Reds to make progress to the final, no matter who they face on the way.

The Premier League

Liverpool retains a one-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after 26 games this season, and Jurgen Klopp’s men are very much on course to win the league.

They are the only club that has stopped Manchester City from dominating the competition like Bayern Munich does in La Liga and PSG in France.

Liverpool won the Premier League last in 2020, but they took the title race to the final day in 2019 and 2022 and would feel they can still win it this year.

City and the Reds were the top two sides in the Premier League for a long time, but we now have a three-horse race.

Arsenal has been brilliant this term after coming very close to winning the Premier League in the last campaign.

Defeating Liverpool earlier in the year means the Gunners are back in the race and have been the most efficient team to watch in 2024.

Liverpool will face some crucial fixtures before this season finishes, including Manchester City at home and a difficult but exciting trip to Manchester United before the season, which could be the games that decide if they will be champions or not.

Jurgen Klopp has been one of the best managers in the Premier League since the German became Liverpool’s gaffer, and his team could end this season with that quadruple in the bag, but there are many more games to play.
