Why you should not underestimate Liverpool in this campaign

23/08/2023

Liverpool had a poor 2022/2023 season, and it was one term no one saw coming because of how ridiculously good they were in the previous campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s men nearly won four trophies, but after selling the likes of Sadio Mane and Divock Origi, among others, Liverpool struggled last season.

It was a shock to see them miss out on the top four, but during the term, we knew something was wrong and it was their midfield.

Liverpool remains one of the biggest clubs in the world, but even they need to improve their options constantly.

They failed to improve their midfield and paid with some poor performance on the pitch, which eventually led to a failed season in the last term.

The Reds will compete in the Europa League in this campaign, and it is not what their fans had dreamed of.

Playing in Europe’s second top club competition is a demotion, and that is not where Liverpool wants to be, considering the scheduling of games there.

The Reds will now play matches on Thursdays and Sundays, which means little break between for rests, affecting any club that wants to win the league.

Football fans, in general, have not been excited about how Liverpool’s transfer window went, meaning they are not even a team to consider.

Supporters who buy tickets to watch Liverpool games remain hopeful the team will win a major trophy, but even they have doubts about how they will perform in the league.

Watching most of the predictions by pundits and analysts, you will realise most of them do not consider Liverpool a threat or one of the favourites to win the league.

At best, they are considered one of the clubs that could finish the season inside the top four and secure a return to the Champions League.

A lot of the predictors have tipped Manchester City and Arsenal to be the top two again, with some believing Chelsea will finish about Liverpool as well.

However, the Reds have a great manager and a squad that is able to compete for titles if they fill in the holes left behind by some of the midfielders they lost during the summer.

In this article, we consider reasons why it might be too dangerous to think that Liverpool will have a poor 2023/2024 season.

Jurgen Klopp thrives as an underdog

Klopp has been one of the best managers in Europe since he moved to Liverpool, and the Reds gaffer has continued to prove he is the man for the job.

The German loves to rebuild teams with history and took Borussia Dortmund from the cusp of extinction to winning the league back-to-back over Bayern Munich.

Klopp turned Dortmund into the second top club in Germany, and they have stayed the same until now. He came to Liverpool when the Reds were struggling and has made them the second most successful team in England since he arrived.

The gaffer loves to be underrated, and when that happens, he pulls off a great feat. We expect that to be the case again in this campaign, especially as others will focus on the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah is still red-hot

Mo Salah has been a leading attacker in the Premier League for several seasons, and the Egyptian continues to go strong and deliver top performances for the Reds.

He nearly left before the start of last season before agreeing to sign a new deal for three more seasons.

He is already 31, but the attacker has one of the best bodies in football in terms of fitness, as he rarely misses a game for Liverpool.

He takes good care of himself and uses his fine fitness to his advantage with some impressive football.

Salah has scored at least 19 Premier League goals in each of his six full seasons on the books of Liverpool, making him one player the Reds cannot do without.

Liverpool have been blessed with attacking talents several times in their history, but Salah is probably the best attacker they have had in a long time, and he could lead them to win the league.

Liverpool’s attack is the best in the league

Manchester City has Erling Haaland, Manchester United has Marcus Rashford, and Arsenal has Gabriel Jesus.

These clubs rely on these players for their goals, and it is great to have one man who can bag the goals for you.

However, Liverpool has always had a front three who they rely on, and at the moment, they have the best-attacking talents in the league.

Jurgen Klopp can start his team with Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Mo Salah in a front-three, or he can replace Jota with Darwin Nunez and Diaz with Cody Gakpo.

These players are all quality individuals who will change any game if they are starters or have to come into the matches off the bench.

It makes them unpredictable, so their goals can come from several attackers, not forgetting the threat from attacking midfield, where they have Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

Goals win games and trophies. If these Liverpool attackers are in their best shape in this campaign, we expect them to win many games and end the term with some trophies in the bag.

Little to no expectations are placed on them

Because of how poorly Liverpool performed last season and the few transfer deals they got done in this window, it is hard to see people who expect a lot from them.

For the first time in several seasons, Liverpool are not expected to do well during a term, as everyone focuses on the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.

Some even consider Manchester United better than Liverpool, and the Red Devils should finish above the Reds this term.

However, Liverpool has some of the best players in the league and would relish going about their business with no one expecting so much from them as a team.

They will use this to their advantage and continue to win as many matches as possible to ensure they do well in every competition.

This Premier League season will be tricky for all the clubs in the competition, and as usual, there are no clear favourites who could end the term as champions.

We have all seen that City could still be champions, and Arsenal has remained one of the top clubs in the land and would be eager to do better than they did in the last campaign.

Chelsea has an exciting team, while Manchester United are an emerging force under Erik Ten Hag.

All of them have the same chance to be champions when the term ends if a surprise winner like Brighton does not emerge.

However, we must be careful about underestimating what Liverpool can do during the campaign, as the Reds have shown they are superb competitors when on their day.

Fans will be eager to see what a fully-fit Diaz can do, just as they enjoy the competition for a place between Jota and Nunez while Salah continues to run down the wings in superb fashion for them.

It is an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan, and they will all be hopeful their side will end the term as champions or at least win a trophy.
