Will Tottenham be the surprise champions of England this season?

12/10/2023

Tottenham has roared back to life under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, who hasn’t even finished a season as the club’s manager.

Spurs have been underachievers in the Premier League for much of their existence, and it is not because they have not worked hard enough to become more relevant.

The Lilywhites have built new stadiums, signed world-class players and named world-class managers as their boss.

World-class managerial failures

There is hardly another club in England who have been through so many top-class managers like Tottenham in the last decade, yet the Lilywhites do not have a trophy to show for it.

They even seem to regress when good coaches come through the door at the club, with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte failing to make them a better side.

Mourinho is one of the world’s best managers, but the Portuguese gaffer failed to make the required impact at Spurs, with Daniel Levy recently admitting it was a mistake to bring him in.

However, Mourinho has won several league titles and European trophies at FC Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

It is hard to believe that it was his fault that the team failed to do well in all competitions, but it is hard to argue with Levy.

Under Conte, they also seemed to make some progress initially, but it all unravelled quickly, with the ill-tempered Italian eventually going on an outburst that cost him his job.

With failure still the outcome of appointing top managers, Spurs have humbled themselves and made Ange Postecoglu their latest manager.

Here comes Postecoglou

The Australian achieved great success in the Scottish Premier League with Celtic, but every manager wins with Celtic in Scotland, so not many of us were surprised by his success.

This also bred scepticism when he was named the manager of Spurs because he did not look the part.

But Ange has turned Spurs into a results machine in the first few months of his time at the helm.

Thanks to the poor form of Manchester City and some help from VAR, the Lilywhites are at the top of the Premier League table during this October international break.

Spurs deserve their spot at the top of the league standings, having sold-out Spurs tickets in all their games this season.

Ange is working his magic at the North London club and he might just shock everyone and get them to win the league this term.

If he even makes the top four, he would deserve a lot of credit, considering that Spurs lost Harry Kane in the summer.

No Kane, no Problem

The striker scored 30 league goals for them last term, and without those strikes, they could have been in relegation trouble.

It is not just the last campaign that Kane scored that many goals for the Lilywhites. He has always been their leading scorer, so we mostly doubted how they would survive without him.

Spurs have not replaced Kane, but what they have done is even better than heading into the market to replace the England captain.

Ange has instead built his team around no one player in particular, which is beautiful to see.

Kane was the main man in the Spurs team and when he did not play, the team struggled to get going.

However, Ange has made them a better unit, with everyone doing well because they have the responsibility to rescue the squad simultaneously.

When a team does not rely on one player to score goals for them, it becomes hard to stop them, and we can say Spurs is currently unstoppable.

With James Maddison filling in well and Heung-min Son taking over the captaincy in fantastic fashion, could this be Tottenham’s year?

Should Spurs target a Premier League or FA Cup win?

Ange may have targeted the Carabao Cup as his first competition to win when he arrived in London, but his team has already been knocked out of the competition.

They now have just the league and FA Cup to win, so why should they not go for the league at once?

Spurs have traditionally not been considered for the league title and are likely surprised that they are at the top of the standings.

But Ange’s side has shown they can defeat anyone, and they seem to have some element of luck on their side.

The most controversial match in the Premier League this season is their game against Liverpool after the Reds had a clear goal ruled out following a massive mistake by the VAR and the centre referee.

Teams who have won the Premier League or any other competition worldwide have had an element of luck, and it seems to be on the side of Tottenham this season.

If they stay together and continue to win matches when they are stuck in difficult situations, that element of luck will get them through the rough patch.

Underratedly good summer businesses

After failing to replace Kane with a world-class striker in the last transfer window, it seems Spurs have not had a good summer, with most of us writing them off for that decision.

However, taking a closer look at their business in the last transfer window shows they did a good job.

The Lilywhites replaced the error-prone Hugo Lloris with Guglielmo Vicario, who has simply been terrific for them so far.

The Italian is a great shot-stopper who came out of nowhere to become one of the hardest goalies to score against in the Premier League.

Destiny Udogie joined them after his loan spell at Udinese last season, and the Italian youngster is one of the finest signings of the summer in the Premier League among defenders.

Micky van de Ven has slotted into their defence superbly and is forming a fine defensive partnership with the impeccable Cristian Romero.

James Maddison has arguably been their best signing so far, and only a few of us have been surprised by his performance.

We mostly knew that he would hit a new level when he left Leicester City for a bigger club, which has happened since he moved to Tottenham in the last transfer window.

Brennan Johnson has not exactly had enough minutes on the pitch for us to judge him, but we all saw how prolific he can be during his time at Nottingham Forest.

When he gets into the team, we expect him to bring more goals to Tottenham’s game, making them even better as a team.

Resurgent players helping the charge

Apart from the performances of their new signings, Spurs have done well this term because of the resurgence of some of their players.

One individual who has stood out this season, despite being at the club since 2021, is Senegalese midfielder Pape Matar Sarr.

The 21-year-old struggled to play last season despite joining Tottenham as one of the finest young midfielders in Europe.

However, Ange has made him. one of the starters at the club this term, with the more experienced and popular Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg taking his place on the bench.

At 21, the youngster is proving to be a key player for Spurs, and his partnership with Yves Bissouma in the Spurs midfield has been a key to their success so far.

Son Heung-min is another top player who struggled at the club last season, even though he won the Golden Boot in the previous campaign.

However, he has already bagged six goals in eight Premier League games this season, making him one of the leading scorers in the competition.

His resurgence is significant for Spurs now that his partner in crime, Kane, is gone, and his form will be vital in helping them win the league or the FA Cup.
