The most interesting title races in Europe this season

07/03/2024

There are so many interesting title races in Europe this season as clubs battle to be champions in their domestic competitions.

The Premier League is leading the way, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal all battling to be champions.

In La Liga, Real Madrid is expected to win the title by the end of the term, but that does not mean it has been straightforward for them so far.

Los Blancos are used to challenges from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid over the years, but in this campaign, Girona has been their main rival.

The little-known side with a lot of influence from Manchester City is refusing to let Barca and Atletico push them away from the top two.

They topped the league standings for a long time before their performance suffered and it affected their position on the league table.

In Germany, Bayer Leverkusen is on the verge of history as they get set to end Bayern Munich’s dominance of the Bundesliga.

Bayern has won the last ten consecutive league titles and even when they have a bad season, they find a way to be champions as was the case last term.

However, in this campaign, Leverkusen, under Xabi Alonso will surely be crowned German champions as they are now ten points clear at the top of the league standings and are unbeaten.

Away from the top European leagues, there is an interesting title race going on in Portugal where Sporting Clube could be champions in the summer.

Ruben Amorim, who could be Liverpool’s coach next season, is leading the Lisbon club to win the league, but Benfica is following them closely.

FC Porto is not so far behind both clubs and if they suffer a loss of form, Porto could close the gap and make it a three-horse race.

In Turkiye, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are challenging each other to be champions at the end of the term and it has been an enthralling challenge.

Fans who buy match tickets on Seatsnet always expect to get the best from the games they attend and we have discussed some of the best title races this term.

The Premier League

Manchester City is used to Liverpool being the main challengers to their crown as champions of England and the Reds won the title in 2020.

In 2022, Liverpool took City all the way and the title race was decided in the final minutes of the Premier League season.

However, last term, Liverpool were not at the races as they suffered from poor form for much of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were poor in midfield and it affected their overall season as they finished in the 5th position and Newcastle replaced them in the top four.

Arsenal became the main challenger to City’s crown and it seemed they could truly be champions, but the Gunners failed at the important stage of the term as they could not deal with the pressure.

This term, Mikel Arteta’s men have grown and we now have a superb three-horse race, with just two points separating third-place Arsenal from the top of the league table.

The Premier League title could be won by any of these clubs and the match between Liverpool and Manchester City this weekend will be important to both clubs.

La Liga

In La Liga, we all expect Madrid to win the title, but nothing is certain and Los Blancos recently dropped points against Valencia, which came as a huge surprise.

Girona is challenging them for the top spot, but Barcelona is still not far away and could take over the top spot if Madrid begins to drop points unnecessarily.

With Jude Bellingham, Madrid is the clear favourite to win La Liga this term and after 27 league games, they have a seven-point advantage over Girona who are second and an eight-point advantage over Barcelona.

We still have eleven more league games to go before the season ends and anything can happen.

With that point cushion, it will be difficult for Madrid not to win the title, but injuries to a few more key players could make their form drop and allow the others into the title race.

Girona threatened to write an amazing story in Spanish football with their early season form and we still cannot write them off finishing inside the top four.

To achieve this, they very likely have to get back to building a winning run and hoping Madrid begins to drop some points.

Liga Portugal

Another interesting title race is brewing in the Liga Portugal as Sporting Clube and Benfica fight for the top spot.

Ruben Amorim is proving again why he is such a highly-rated manager and one of the few coaches who have a huge release clause written into their contract.

His Sporting Clube side is leading Benfica by a point with a game in hand and if they win that fixture, they will go four points clear.

The Portuguese league has produced some of the best talents in the top European leagues now, so we are not surprised by the quality of the competition.

Porto seems to be distant from Benfica and Sporting Clube in the third spot.

However, they recently defeated Benfica 5-0 in the league, and that could be the start of something good.

If they put together a winning run and the clubs above them drop points, we could witness a three-horse race by the end of the season.

Super Lig

The Turkish Super League is another competition where there is a thrilling title race going on as Fenerbahce and Galatasary show why they are the top two clubs in the league.

Galatasary has the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Mauro Icardi and Dries Mertens in their squad, and these players have helped them move two points clear at the top.

Fenerbahce also has the likes of Edin Dzeko, Fred, Leonardo Bonucci, and Dusan Tadic, among others.

These players have experience in the top European leagues and are challenging each other to be champions.

There are ten more games to play before this season ends, and that top spot will change hands on several occasions before the summer.

However, the huge gap both clubs have given the team in the third position means no other club can join this title race, and it will be interesting to see which of them will win the league in the summer.

These are the most interesting title races in Europe at the moment, but there might be more twists in others before this season ends, and it will be enjoyable to see.
