The toughest title race to predict in Europe this season

01/10/2024

There are so many battles in Europe this season, and we are just over five games into the campaign, but we can already tell you some of the favourites.

Every top club on the continent has dropped points in their domestic competition this season and that is why we love European football.

The Premier League is considered the toughest and most exciting competition in the world, but in what could be his last season in England, can Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City win five titles in a row?

He and his group of talents have turned the competition into a ‘farmers’ league’ and fans are hoping Arsenal or Liverpool will stop them from winning the title this term.

In Serie A, Inter Milan has won two of the last four titles and they are generally considered the favourites to be champions again this term.

Juventus and AC Milan would not want that to happen and they are the main rivals, while in Germany Bayer Leverkusen has lost their unbeaten run.

It stretched the entirety of last season and has finally been ended, but that could be a good thing because it now offers their players a chance to effortlessly fight to win the league with no burden of maintaining an unbeaten run.

But Bayern Munich is in sensational goalscoring form under Vincent Kompany and they are eager to win back the crown this term.

In France, Kylian Mbappe’s summer departure has opened the door for other clubs to compete well and win their league crown ahead of PSG.

Olympique Marseille looks the most likely to win the title if PSG does not, but we cannot rule out AS Monaco and Olympique Lyon, so its another close affair.

In La Liga, Barcelona are the early pace setters and look to be in great shape under Hansi Flick, but there is still more than enough time for that to change.

With Mbappe on their team, Real Madrid will be confident that they will eventually catch Barca and even overtake them.

Which league is the most competitive and has the most difficult title race to predict this season? We consider the top five leagues and add the level of unpredictability at the bottom of each league.

Serie A

Serie A has emerged as the most competitive league in Europe over the last few seasons as it has had three different champions in the last four seasons.

Prior to that, it was a boring competition, with Juventus winning nine consecutive league titles, and fans expected them to win it every summer.

However, the Old Lady shot itself on the foot when it changed the winning manager, Max Allegri in 2019. Although Maurizio Sarri won the title in 2020, Juve has not won a league crown since then and have even struggled to finish inside the top four.

Defending champions Inter Milan has won two of the last four and are considered favourites to win this one as well.

They look set to dominate the competition for a long time, considering the stability of their squad, but their inconsistent start to the season has made it hard to consider them outright favourites.

Napoli tops the standings after six games, despite losing their first match and it looks like making Antonio Conte their manager is truly a perfect match.

Thiago Motta’s Juventus is also having a brilliant season and haven’t conceded a goal after six games, so they are right there in the title race.

Napoli, Inter Milan, Juventus, and AC Milan are the main challengers for the title and these clubs make the Serie A tickets sell and the title race hard to predict.

Level of unpredictabilty: High

Premier League

Liverpool and Arsenal are doing all they can to stop Manchester City from winning a fifth consecutive Premier League title this season.

The Citizens have looked beatable this term and the long-term injury to Rodri will make it hard for them to win many games.

Apart from losing Rodri, they have also lost Julian Alvarez, a decision that they might regret because of his knack for scoring important goals for them.

Liverpool failed to sign more than one player in the last transfer window after contemplating if they needed to make signings under Arne Slot.

However, the Reds are still a strong team and they are at the top of the league standings after six matches.

Most people think Liverpool do not have the quality to win the title and it could Arsenal’s year, especially after they strengthened their defence by signing Riccardo Calafiori.

The Gunners have been the only club challenging Manchester City for the title in the last two seasons, and fans think they could be a third time lucky.

Premier League tickets are selling fast because of these clubs, but Chelsea is another team that could enter the race if they keep performing well.

Level of unpredictabilty: High

Bundesliga

Bayer Leverkusen’s success in the Bundesliga last season will make more clubs believe that they could be champions of Germany as well.

Their win ended Bayern Munich’s decade-long dominance of the competition and fans are eager to know if the Bavarians can win back the title next summer.

Bayer Leverkusen remains the main reason some fans will buy Bundesliga tickets because of their terrific performance in the competition last season.

However, RB Leipzig, Borrussia Dortmund and Stuttgart will also fancy their chance of winning the competition.

While everyone wants to know how Bayer Leverkusen will perform this season, these clubs will be plotting to become the next surprise champion of Germany.

This will make the competition even harder to predict than it could have been if it were just Leverkusen that is challenging Bayern to be champions.

Level of unpredictabilty: High

Ligue 1

The departure of Kylian Mbappe from Ligue 1 has opened the door for another club to win the title ahead of PSG.

Ligue 1 tickets will sell more now because the playing field seems to be level and Olympique Marseille is looking to close the gap between them and PSG and become champions.

Roberto de Zerbi’s is looking to do a fine job at OM and he knows he alone cannot make things better and he needs to ensure his players are on the same page with him.

Marseille is the main challenger to PSG, but even they do not seem to have enough fuel for the long term, while Luis Enrigue has done brilliantly to stop his team from relying on Mbappe since last term.

His side has moved on well and although this is just the start to the season, it is hard to see another club stopping PSG from retaining their crown.

Level of unpredictability: Intermediate

La Liga

Barcelona has begun this season well, but their lack of squad depth means they may not be champions at the end of the campaign.

Hansi Flick’s team is relying a lot on youngsters which is exciting and helps to sell La Liga tickets, but youngsters hardly win trophies.

Madrid has made a slow start to this season which has given Barca the chance to stay top and make progress, but the gap between both clubs is not big.

Los Blancos will catch Barca as the season continues even though Flick seems to know what to do to achieve success this term.

It will be a long season, but La Liga has been a duopoly for a long time and it is hard to see another club winning the title this season apart from Barca or Madrid.

Level of unpredictability: Intermediate

Conclusion

Although this is just the start to the new season across Europe, but we can already tell if these competitions are predictable or not.
