The most interesting Serie A games left in January 2024

16/01/2024

The Italian Serie A has experienced some explosive growth in recent seasons and remains one of the top five European leagues worldwide.

In the 90s and early 2000s, Serie A attracted the world’s best talents as some of the top players globally wanted to play there.

The likes of Lazio, Juventus, Napoli, AC Milan, and Inter Milan, among others, signed some terrific players and won several domestic and European laurels.

The Premier League is now the biggest league in the world and teams in Germany look much better and richer than Serie A clubs recently.

However, the Italian top flight remains the competition that most people love and are interested in following.

The games in that division are watched by thousands in the stadiums and many more from around the world.

Juve is the most successful club in the league and is battling with Inter Milan to become the champions again.

Inter has the stronger squad and Juve has only been in the race because of their lack of European football this term.

Regardless, Max Allegri’s men are a team to like and every fan will want to save their spot in the Serie A stadiums for the remaining games.

In the next few weeks, there are some interesting fixtures to follow before January ends and we have discussed why you should watch them.

AC Milan vs Bologna

Bologna has emerged as a very exciting team in Serie A this season as they challenge for the top four in Italy.

In England, Newcastle United won a place in the top four last season ahead of Liverpool and played in the Champions League.

It was remarkable, can Bologna do the same in Serie A this term? It does seem like that could happen.

Thiago Motta’s team have been so fluid and exciting to watch, yet they cause all kinds of problems to their opponents in every game.

They have some stimulating players like Joshua Zirkzee and Lewis Ferguson who are being eyed by top European clubs because of their performances.

If Bologna makes the top four, AC Milan could be the club that misses out on a place them.

Milan has been hot and cold, with a stint in the Champions League affecting their performance in domestic competitions this term.

They have also suffered from many injury problems which is threatening to cost them a place in the top four.

They have a ten-point cushion on Bologna after 20 games, but this game will be one of the trickiest games they will play.

Lazio vs Napoli

Napoli won Serie A last season after three decades of hurt but their defence of the crown has been chaotic this term.

After Luciano Spalletti left them following last season’s success, we expected Napoli to bring a good manager to build on that, but they have made some of the most unexpectedly worst decisions.

They went for Rudi Garcia first and now are being managed by Walter Mazzarri, two coaches who have no business managing a defending champion.

It has shown and Lazio will look to take advantage of that to win this game, but the Rome side is also underperforming their form from the last campaign.

Maurizio Sarri’s side finished inside the Serie A top four, but after 20 games, they are not close to repeating that success this term.

They are having a better season than Napoli, but after losing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, they have failed to make an impression this term and may not be clear winners in this game.

But the Rome side has a good record in this fixture and they defeated Napoli in the last two meetings between these clubs, which could give them some confidence.

Fiorentina vs Inter Milan

This game is between two clubs who reached European finals last season as Fiorentina played in the Conference League final against West Ham and Inter Milan were defeated by Manchester City in the Champions League final.

Inter feels they should win the Serie A this term and we can all agree that it is theirs to lose, but Fiorentina will not be easy opponents.

They are battling for a top-four spot and could take the one Lazio used to play in the Champions League this term.

Vincenzo Italiano is doing a superb job in Florence and his team will fancy their chance of halting Inter’s momentum in this game.

The Milan side looks unstoppable at times as they defeat any opponent in the league, having lost just a game all season. Will Fiorentina become the next team to defeat them?

La Viola won at Inter last year, but they lost this reverse fixture 4-0, so it will take a lot of work for them to win again, home support could help.

Empoli vs Monza

Away from teams competing at the top of the standings, this game would be between two teams who do not want to be relegated.

After selling some of their finest talents, Empoli finds itself in deep relegation trouble this season and will be eager to win this game.

They have spent most of the campaign inside the relegation zone and will face a Monza side with European ambitions.

The Boys from Brianza are respectably in midtable, but they are closer to the drop zone than to the top of the league standings, so they cannot start losing games.

Empoli, on the other hand, will feel they can still save their season and this is the time to start winning games.

There are over 17 more league games to play and if they go on a winning run, they could be safe by the summer.

Monza won the last two games between both clubs, but Empoli has not lost any of their last five home games against their visitors, which will fill them with confidence ahead of the game.

Frosinone vs Cagliari

Cagliari and Frosinone gained promotion to Serie A last summer and their immediate goal is to survive the drop.

Both clubs have won some games with good performances, but they are struggling to maintain their place in Serie A.

This game will be an important three points to win for both clubs and they know it, so we expect a very good match.

Claudio Ranieri brought Cagliari back to the top four and is now expected to help them stay, can he defeat the young and exciting Frosinone?

Thanks to several loanees from Juventus, Frosinone has some of the finest youngsters in Serie A this season and they are brave when they play.

It could prove costly sometimes, but there is no shortage of entertainment and attacking play whenever they play.

Results are all that matters, and they have to win most of their remaining games, including this match against the Red and Blues.

Cagliari has not lost to Frosinone in five games. It will be interesting to see if that will change in this fixture.
